رَضيتُI was content بِماwith what أَفنَيتَyou destroyed فارضَso be content بِماwith what بَقىremained
وَماand not أَتَّقيكَI fear you اليَومَtoday قَدindeed كُنتُI used to أَتَّقيfear
I am content with what you have destroyed; be content with what remains.
I am content with what you have destroyed; be content with what remains.
Today I no longer guard myself against you, though once I did.
And I do not fear you today, though once I did.
وَأَذكَيتَand you kindled أَشجانيmy sorrows فَهَلso, are…? أَنتَyou مُحرِقيone who burns me
وَأَطلَقتَand you unloosed أَجفانيmy eyelids فَهَلso, are…? أَنتَyou مُغرِقيone who drowns me
You have kindled my sorrows—are you, then, to burn me?
And you have kindled my sorrows—will you burn me?
You have set my eyelids flowing—are you, then, to drown me?
And you have unloosed my eyelids—will you drown me?
بَذَلتُI offered لَهُto him رِقىًmy servitude (probable intended reading) فَهَلso, is…? هُوَhe ماfirst fragment of ‘my master’ لِكيsecond fragment of ‘my master’
وَمَلَّكتُهُand I made him owner of قَلبيmy heart فَهَلso, is…? هُوَhe مُعتِقيone who frees me
I yielded him my servitude—is he, then, my master?
I offered him my servitude—so is he my master?
I made him master of my heart—will he, then, set me free?
And I made him master of my heart—will he set me free?
لَقَدindeed ضَرَبواthey made ماthe space بَينَbetween جَفنِيَmy eyelid وَالكَرىand slumber

They have truly set the distance between my eyelids and sleep
Indeed, they have made the gap between my eyelid and slumber
farther than the distance between West and East.
greater than that between west and east.

Ah, has word reached the tale-bearers that, though I am far away,
Ah, have the tale-bearers heard that, despite separation,
through sleep’s phantom—or through wishes—we meet?
we meet through sleep’s phantom or through wishes?

It has no robe but darkness, buttoned close,
And no garment save one of buttoned darkness,
and no provisions but drowsiness patched together;
and no provisions save patched-up drowsiness.

it wades toward us through a sea of night, yet has not waded it,
He wades toward us through a sea of night, yet has not waded,
and beneath it is the dark moon’s full orb, like a skiff.
and beneath him the full moon of the dark phase is like a skiff.
