أَما تَرى في خَدِّها حَيَّةً
وَعَقرَباًand a scorpion بَشَّرَتاboth brought glad tidings بِالعَجيبof something wondrous
وَعَقرَباً بَشَّرَتا بِالعَجيب
Do you not see a snake upon her cheek
Don't you see a snake
And a scorpion? Both have brought glad tidings of a marvel.
And a scorpion that brought good news
فَحَيَّةٌfor a snake بِالوَثبِof leaping قَدindeed بَشَّرَتit brought glad tidings
فَحَيَّةٌ بِالوَثبِ قَد بَشَّرَت
وَعَقرَبٌand a scorpion قَدindeed بَشَّرَتit brought glad tidings بِالدَبيبof creeping
وَعَقرَبٌ قَد بَشَّرَت بِالدَبيب
For the snake has brought glad tidings of leaping,
A snake that brought good news with a leap
And the scorpion has brought glad tidings of creeping.
And a scorpion that brought good news with a sting
