هُوَit is الصَبرُpatience لَكِنbut لاnot أَقولُI say جَميلُbeautiful
أَصَبرٌis there patience? عَلىover الهِندِيِّal-Hindi (the Indian) وَهوَwhile he is قَتيلُslain
It is patience, but I do not call it beautiful.
Patience, but I do not say it is good
Can there be patience over al-Hindi, when he lies slain?
To be patient with the Indian while he kills
فَهَلso is there? مِنany طَبيبٍphysician إِنif يَكُنthere is one فهوَthen he is آلِمٌin pain
وَقَلبُand the heart المُعَنّىof the tormented one عِلَّةٌa malady وَعَليلُand ailing
Is there, then, a physician? If one exists, he is in pain,
Is there a doctor if there is he is pained
And the tormented one's heart is both malady and ailing.
And the meaning is turned upside down, sick
مَحاerased الدَهرُtime داراًa house كُنتُمُyou were تَسكُنونَهاyou dwell in it
فَمَنwho, then ليfor me بِمَرأىwith a sight of الدارِthe house وَهيَwhile it is طُلولُruins
Time erased a house where you once lived.
Time erased a house you used to dwell
Who, then, can grant me sight of the house, now ruins?
Who will show me the house while it is in ruins
وَنَخلٍand palms يَغيظُprovokes anger الظِلُّthe shade إِذwhen هُوَit ساكِنٌstill
عَلىat الظُهرِnoon خَفّاقُfluttering العَشِيِّthe evening ظَليلُrich in shade
And palms whose shade provokes anger when it lies still
And palm trees that annoy the shade while it rests
At noon, fluttering at evening, rich in shade.
On the back, a fluttering dusk, little shade
وَإِنّيand indeed I لِماwith what تُجنيyield for harvesting النَخيلُthe palms لَمُطعِمٌsurely a giver of food
وَلَكِنand yet بِمَنwith whoever يَجنيharvests النَخيلَthe palms بِخَيلُmiserly
And I do feed others with what the palms yield,
And I, when palms bear fruit, am feeding
And yet I am miserly with whoever harvests the palms.
But who will reap the palms with horses
فَدَيتُكَmay I be your ransom ظِلّاًa shade لَوif تَذوبُyou melt وَراءَناbehind us
وَماand not لِيَfor me فيin الأَطرافِthe edges مِنهُof it مَقيلُa noonday resting place
May I be your ransom, O shade, if you should melt behind us,
I ransom you, a shadow, if it melts behind us
And I have no noonday resting place at its edges.
And I have no shelter from it in the horizons
وَقَدand already مُدِّدَتwere stretched out أَطرافُهُits edges شَغَفاًout of passionate longing بِهاfor her
فَكانَso it was عَلىupon نَارٍa fire فَقُلتُso I said يَسيلُit flows
And its edges have been stretched out in passionate longing for her,
Its edges stretched in passion for them
So it was upon a fire, and I said, 'It will flow.'
It was on fire so I said it flows
حَمىmay protect اللَهُGod ظِلّاًa shade وَالظِلالُand the shadows قَصيرَةٌshort
يَفيضُspills over عَلىacross وَجهِthe face of الثَرىthe earth وَيَطولُand grows long
May God protect a shade that, while the shadows are short,
God spared the shade and shades are short
Spills across the face of the earth and grows long.
It overflows on the face of the earth and lengthens
وَكَيفَand how لِعَينِfor the eye of الشَمسِthe sun لَوif أَنَّthat جَفنَهاits eyelid
بِإِثمِدِwith antimony kohl ماwhat مَدَّspread الظِلالُthe shadows كَحيلُlined with kohl
And how would the sun's eye fare, if its eyelid
How can the eye of the sun if its eyelid
Were lined with antimony kohl from what the shadows spread?
With the blackness of what the shades extended, kohl
