    You are bent on rebuking me without seeking my excuse,

    and excessive in reproaching me, yet negligent of my excuse.

    Whenever my tears flow in answer to a reprover,

    passion finds its order in that scattering.

    You have made war on me: be warned of a war of glances,

    which I unsheathe as my blade, assuring me victory.

    وَلَم أَرَهُ يُغني وَلَكِنَّهُ يُغري

    Indeed, I love reproach in loving my slayer;

    I have not found it helpful, yet it entices.

    Whenever I mention you in solitude,

    I truly delight, for your sake, in the tears that flow,

    فَلي راحَةٌ في أَن أُجَفِّفَ مِن جَمري

    though they are embers, however their water deceives;

    I find relief in drying some of my embers.

    They say that patience brings relief,

    but never guaranteed I would reach patience's end.

    In patience there is profit, or a road leading

    to profit; but the loss is in my lifetime.

    They threatened me with departure, unaware

    that through estrangement they had already traveled away.

    Were my heart present between my ribs,

    I would complain through it of the suffering I have met.

    Did my being free deceive the people's eyes?

    They did not know that passion holds me captive.

    وَدَمعاً عَلى رَبعٍ وَقلَباً عَلى فِكرِ

    I am indeed the boldest of people, in heart toward grief,

    in tears over a dwelling, and in heart toward reflection;

    yet in love their most timid, in eyelids shrinking from sleep,

    in speech from consolation, and in resolve from patience.

    Do not suppose I laugh from happiness:

    many a laughing person has eyes weeping from thought.

    And a graceful woman, like wine: union with her brings

    a hangover, though the deception lies in drunkenness.

    Yet I can stop wine when it courses through me,

    while she reaches depths of my secret self that wine cannot.

    وَحَسبُكَ ما في الغيدِ من حِليَةِ السِحرِ

    She adorns ornaments, yet is unadorned by them;

    enough for you is graceful women's adornment of enchantment.

    Why have you denied the full moon its place within you?

    Do you not conceal it with a frown beside your mouth?

    Nothing brought out the pearl whose home is the sea

    except its thirst for that sea.

    Before meeting her, my ears had never heard

    of ornaments upon ornaments, or pearls upon pearls.

    فَمَن لي بِها وَالعَيشُ في غُرَّةِ الدَهرِ

    A face appeared, showing me the bright brow of time;

    who will grant me her, and life in time's bright prime?

    When my eye saw Shuja ibn Shawar,

    I marveled at reports that fall short of firsthand knowledge.

    A form appeared—rather, a surah revealed—

    within which his countenance demands a prostration of thanks.

    I glorified the Lord of the Worlds because

    I saw them gathered together without a resurrection.

    Their livelihoods flowed freely from his right hand:

    does a land ever seek refuge in anything but rain?

    I swear: were he not a mountain of might—

    and mountains are appointed to move at the Resurrection—

    I would have been bewildered by the Resurrection's mysteries appearing,

    for I saw generosity, its sea bursting forth.

    Your house is as the world, your hand as rain,

    your shelter as life, and your day as all time.

    Who would woo a beauty while cheapening her dowry?

    You have indeed given noble virtues their fair dowry:

    وَفَتكٍ بِلا ذُعرٍ وَجودٍ بِلا عُذرِ

    forbearance without weakness, rule without whim,

    deadly force without panic, and generosity without excuse;

    clouds of a hand that rain nothing but red—

    in war or peace, blood and gold.

    You purified a land whose dust you trod,

    and we see in it not a handspan of resistance to you.

    Banners red from spearthrusts against the foes,

    and at night from fire, with banners of red.

    Those resolves, when they strike, turn them into

    Egypt's pelicans in the crops of victory.

    Blood from them clothes the blades, revealing

    to us fire that cannot be quenched and floats upon the river.

    وَإِن يَلقَها مِنهُم جَريءٌ فَبِالظَهرِ

    Your foes seem angry at the spears;

    if a daring one among them meets them, it is with his back.

    Ah, how mightily your hands have watered, making grow

    branches of spears, with heads upon them like fruit!

    When they drink the wine of blood and sway,

    you enforce the drunkenness penalty by shattering them.

    وَما اِفتَقَرَت قُلبُ الغَمامِ إِلى حَفرِ

    They gave to the people before those people asked for bounty;

    the clouds' wells had no need of digging.

    Protectors, as though the sun were one of their women:

    needing nothing, they concealed her in a secluded tent.

    بِجُردٍ عَوانِ البِكرِ

    They wooed glory in its maiden and mature forms,

    with sleek steeds seasoned for the maiden;

    and assembly places green with fertility, guarded by

    swords that cast drought into the green depths.

    Judgment with calculation, pardon with power,

    generosity in due measure, and speech in due measure.

    فَيَهنيكُمُ أَن كُنتُمُ سِرَّ ذا الذَكرِ

    The Merciful preserved his remembrance on the Tablet;

    may it gladden you that you were the secret of this remembrance.

    كَما أَخَذَ الأَلواحَ موسى عَلى قَدرِ

    And their taking the tablets of his miraculous signs,

    as Moses took the Tablets by decree;

    as Noah, when the waters overflowed, rode

    upon a vessel of planks sailing by his direction.

    بِها السُمرُ قَد نُظِّمنَ لِلصَفِّ في سَطرِ

    You held firm with planks, with the firmness of resolve;

    upon them the brown spears were arrayed for battle in a line.

    وَما يَنفَعُ التَحذيرُ عِندَ اِنقِضا الأَمرِ

    The one concerned with their affairs warned them;

    what use is warning when the matter is finished?

    وَلَو لَم تُنَبَّه باتَتِ الطَيرُ لا تَسري

    He told them: You have slept, so do not rouse the sandgrouse;

    had they not been roused, the birds would have stayed the night without traveling.

    When they sought help, none came; and how could

    a weak bird be helped while in the falcon's talon?

    وَحاذِر شَرارَ النارِ مِن قَبلِ أَن تَسري

    Guard against a matter's beginning before it spreads;

    beware the sparks of fire before it courses onward.

    Most of a person's harm comes from those he loves:

    have you not seen that wine reveals secrets?

    You came to us with cheerfulness and generosity:

    dawn to night, and rainclouds to wilderness.

    You came with gentleness of character and with blades,

    gentler than rainclouds, and rougher than rock.

    With an army whose iron, when the dust reveals it,

    makes you think they have tipped their brown shafts with stars.

    You see from it a barrier of iron, as though

    you saw in it, by day, a night advancing.

    When their banners intertwine and birds gather

    toward them, you say: They yearn for a nest.

    وَأَحسَنُ نورِ الوَصلِ في ظُلمَةِ الهَجرِ

    Your face shone forth and cleared the dust as it appeared;

    reunion's light is loveliest in estrangement's darkness:

    brighter than lightning and greater in radiance,

    more awe-inspiring than a sword, filling the breast more fully.

    How lovely is India's sword upon guidance's shoulder,

    and justice's crown upon rule's brow!

    بِأَنَّ الوَغى اِنجابَت بِلا البيضِ وَالسُمرِ

    Tell the bright nights and their dark ones of it:

    that battle cleared away without white swords or brown spears;

    فَلا الرَفعُ في زَيدٍ وَلا النَصبُ في عَمرو

    that time's vicissitudes grew stranger in their judgments:

    no raising of Zayd, and no setting down of Amr;

    and that the strategies of minds are wondrous:

    through them the passage narrows for the vast army.

    They kill outright without arrows and cleave without blades,

    stealing toward a man while he remains unaware.

    Whenever the steeds of misfortune gallop together,

    how far from saving a man is escape through flight!

    Time's vicissitudes transformed everything you see,

    except that face's adornment of cheerfulness.

    They could neither diminish it nor add

    to it whenever they bestowed the sweet and the bitter.

    Our master, if you came late in time,

    the Feast of Breaking the Fast came at the month's end.

    The comparison I mentioned is complete for me:

    the Feast of Sacrifice came at the end of the ten days.

    The decrees of fate assigned your rank first,

    as the ordering came to us on the Night of Decree.

    مَضى الصومُ فَاِستَودَعتَهُ تُحَفَ الأَجرِ

    The feast arrived, and you welcomed it with your generosity;

    the fast passed, and you entrusted it with gifts of reward.

    You musk-scented its morning with justice and piety,

    and perfumed its night with paired prayers and the odd prayer.

    The hand of days will consume every store,

    except the treasure you have in God's keeping.

    Indeed, I count the crescents, as they wax,

    as guests seeking hospitality in your cheerful welcome.

    You clipped time's vicissitudes away from us, while they saw

    their crescent like a clipping from a fingernail.

    How many a night's neck wears a necklace from his banquet,

    though it is a necklace strung for scattering!

    On earth you rival heaven, because

    you are seen there as likenesses of its bright stars.

    What wonder: a garden claiming kinship with fire,

    when all gardens claim kinship with rain!

    Banquets from which the lands themselves become banquets,

    containing what exceeds reckoning and confinement.

    They have no fault, except that the sons of this world

    were left short of barren land when they beheld them.

    Whoever answers generosity's call makes pilgrimage to them,

    but it is a pilgrimage lasting without departure.

    Noble deeds whose tale I told the morning,

    though it was not veiled in the darkness of night.

    Your tales, in their spanning of distances and their journeys,

    and their enduring among mankind, are like al-Khidr.

    فَما اِنتَقَلَت عَنهُ الأَحاديثُ بِالشُفرِ

    In every land there are witnesses to your generosity;

    so reports of it were not carried by eyelids.

    When you rode out to the canal and its breaching,

    I marveled that seas should travel to a river.

    Likewise, I also marveled that you,

    through a breach, mended every land's brokenness.

    You were generous and brought us to water; it was generous, yet we did not go,

    because we are guests of generosity in this land.

    Your bounty came ahead of the Nile,

    while the Nile was occupied with rising and ebbing.

    How many beautiful benefactions you have bestowed on me!

    They have no fault except my inability to give thanks.

    وَإِن رَوَّحَت سِرّي فَقَد أَتعَبَت فِكري

    If they lightened my chains, they weighed down my back;

    if they refreshed my inward self, they exhausted my thought.

    You chose my earth, O sky, and it bore richly:

    take, then, gratitude's plot for that seed.

    Do you think I conceal gifts?

    Was it not said that the earth brings secrets forth?

    Were the garden to deny the clouds their rain,

    the fragrance wafting from it would shame it.

    O hearer of wishes whispered by his servants,

    when stinginess afflicts hearing like deafness!

    He rose above pride, yet his servant,

    because he counted him a servant, attained true greatness.

    وَقُل لِلأَماني قَد وَصَلتُ بِلا صَبرِ

    Tell the nights: I arrived without traveling by night;

    tell wishes: I arrived without patience.

    وَحَسبُ السُرى أَنّي هُديتُ بِلا فَجرِ

    Enough for wishes that I was watered without rain;

    enough for night journeys that I was guided without dawn.

    This favor revealed your excellence to mankind:

    have you not seen that pearls are found in deep water?

    فَقَد شُغِلوا بِالشُكرِ عَن طَلَبِ الوَفرِ

    You never ceased asking petitioners to spare you praise;

    they were occupied with thanks rather than seeking abundance.

    May the nights spare you what you fear, for they,

    despite their fear of you, fear for the noble man.

    What wonder at them and at us, for we

    were faithful to them awhile, though knowing their treachery.
