بِاللَهِBy God قُلtell لِلنَيلِto the Nile عَنّيon my behalf إِنَّنيthat I
بِاللَهِ قُل لِلنَيلِ عَنّي إِنَّني
لَمdid not أَشفِI quench مِنfrom ماءِwater الفُراتِthe Euphrates غَليلاburning thirst
لَم أَشفِ مِن ماءِ الفُراتِ غَليلا
By God, tell the Nile on my behalf that I
By Allah, say to the Nile from me that truly
have not quenched my burning thirst with the Euphrates’ water.
I have not quenched my thirst from Euphrates' water
وَسَلِand ask الفُؤادَthe heart فَإِنَّهُfor indeed it لِيَfor me شاهِدٌa witness
وَسَلِ الفُؤادَ فَإِنَّهُ لِيَ شاهِدٌ
إِنif كانَwas طَرفيmy eye بِالبُكاءِwith weeping بَخيلاmiserly
إِن كانَ طَرفي بِالبُكاءِ بَخيلا
And ask the heart, for it is my witness,
And ask my heart - for it is to me a witness -
if my eye has been miserly with tears.
If my eyes were miserly with their tears
ياO قَلبُheart كَمhow many خَلَّفتَyou left behind ثَمَّthere بُثَينَةًa Buthayna
يا قَلبُ كَم خَلَّفتَ ثَمَّ بُثَينَةً
وَأُعيذُand I seek protection for صَبرَكَyour patience أَنthat يَكونَit be جَميلاbeautiful
وَأُعيذُ صَبرَكَ أَن يَكونَ جَميلا
O heart, how many a Buthayna you have left behind there!
Oh heart, how many a Buthaina you left behind
And I pray your patience never be beautiful.
And I implore your patience to be good
