ماnot تَطيبُis sweet الدُنياthe world لِفَقدِbecause of losing حَبيبٍa beloved
وَحَياةُand the life المُفارِقينَof those parted حِمامُdeath
The world is not sweet when a beloved is lost;
The world is not pleasant without my beloved
the life of those parted is death.
And the life of the separated is sorrow
فَحَياتيso my life لاmay ... not أَوحَشَleave bereft اللَهُGod مِنهاof it
وَعَلىand to الدَهرِtime بَعدَafter مَوتيmy death السَلامُfarewell
As for my life—may God never leave me bereft of it!
So my life - may Allah not make it lonelier -
And after my death, farewell to time!
And peace be upon time after my death

I will not accept assent on easier terms than a 'no'
I am not pleased with being pleased with less than
whose thunder has rattled at me, O cloud.
The thunder sounding for me, O clouds!
وَأَرىand I see شَخصَهُhis form بِعَينيwith my eye وَسَمعيand my hearing
كُلَّماwhenever مَرَّpassed بِالصَباحِin the morning الحَمامُthe doves
And I see his form with my eye and my hearing
And I see his figure with my eyes and ears
whenever the doves pass by in the morning.
Whenever the doves pass in the morning
إِنَّindeed أَيّامَthe days مَنof one whom نَأَوهُthey have forsaken لَيالٍnights
وَلَياليand the nights مَنof one who زارَهُمvisited them أَحلامُdreams
Indeed, the days of one they have forsaken are nights,
Indeed the days of those kept away are nights
and the nights of one who has visited them are dreams.
And the nights of those who visit them are dreams
إِنَّindeed عَينيmy eye قَدindeed أَغرَقَdrowned النورُthe light عَينيmy eye
فَعَلىso upon مَنwhom تُمَوِّهُpractice deception الأَيّامُthe days
Indeed, my eye—light has drowned my eye;
Indeed my eyes have been drowned in light
whom, then, do the days deceive?
So who can the days deceive?
وَالتَلاقيand meeting فيin ظُلمَةِthe darkness اللَيلِof night ضَوءٌlight

وَالنَوىand separation فيin ضِياthe radiance الصَباحِof morning ظَلامُdarkness
And meeting in the darkness of night is light,
And meeting in the darkness of night is light
and separation in morning's radiance is darkness.
While intention in the brightness of dawn is darkness
بِأَبيmy father as your ransom أَنتَyou مِنwhat a هِلالٍcrescent لِفِطرٍof fast-breaking
غَيرَexcept أَنّاthat we مِنَfrom الوِصالِunion صِيامُare fasting
My father be your ransom—what a crescent of fast-breaking you are!
By my father you are a crescent moon for Eid
Yet we are fasting from union.
Except we fast from union
إِنif تَصِلyou reunite with مَنone whom قَطَعتَyou cut off فَالعامُthen the year يَومٌa day

أَوor تَدَعyou leave مَنone whom وَصَلتَyou joined فَاليَومُthen the day عامُa year
If you reunite with one you cut off, a year is a day;
If you join those you've parted, the year is a day
or leave one you joined, a day is a year.
Or if you leave those joined, the day is a year
أَوor تَقُلyou say ليto me إِنَّthat الغَريمَthe lover ذَميمٌblameworthy

فَجَوابيthen my answer إِنَّindeed الغَرامَpassion ذِمامُa binding pledge
Or if you tell me, 'The lover is blameworthy,'
Or if you say the beloved is despicable
my answer is, 'Passion is a binding pledge.'
My answer is love itself is despicable
رُمتُI sought ماwhat لاnot يَعِزُّis hard to attain عَنكَfor you وَعَنّيand for me
فَكَأَنّيso it is as though I قَدalready رُمتُsought ماwhat لاnot يُرامُcan be attained
I sought what is not beyond you or me,
I threw away what brings you and I no honor
yet it is as though I sought the unattainable.
As if I'd thrown away what cannot be sought
وَإِذاand when جُدتَyou bestowed generously لِلمَنامِupon sleep بِطَيفٍa phantom
فَعَلىthen upon ناظِريmy eye المَنامُsleep حَرامُforbidden
And if you grant sleep a phantom,
And if you are true to the dream with a specter
sleep is forbidden to my eye.
The dream itself becomes forbidden to the seer

بوبُ-loved (beloved, last part) مُذsince قَطُّever ناظِراًan eye وَالمَنامُand sleep
He dwells in my eye; never have the be-
My seer is settled but the beloved hasn't settled
loved and sleep ever dwelt together in an eye.
Since he first looked while dreaming
وَإِذاand when الخَصمُthe adversary كانَwas يَقضيpassing judgment عَلَيناagainst us

فَإِلىthen to مَنwhom فيهِconcerning him يَكونُcan be الخِصامُthe dispute
And if the adversary is passing judgment against us,
And if the opponent rules against us
then to whom can a dispute against him be brought?
To whom will the dispute belong?
إِنَّindeed فيin ناظِرَيكَyour two eyes أَيَّwhat سِهامٍarrows
هِيَthey فيin حَوزِهاtheir possession of القُلوبَhearts سِهامُshares
Indeed, what arrows lie in your two eyes!
Indeed in your eyes are arrows
In their possession of hearts, they are shares.
Which in their quivers capture hearts
مُسقِمٌcausing sickness طَرَفَهُhis gaze بِأَوَّلِat the first لَحظِglance
لَوif تَثَنَّىit were repeated لَزالَthen would depart عَنّيfrom me السَقامُthe sickness
His gaze sickens me at its first glance;
Ailing are my eyes from the first glance
if it were repeated, my sickness would leave me.
If he glanced again, my sickness would be gone
لاdo not تُغالِطmislead عَنِaway from الشِفاءِthe cure جِراحيmy wounds
ماnot شِفاءُthe healing الجِراحِof wounds إِلّاexcept السِهامُarrows
Do not mislead my wounds away from their cure;
Don't argue the cure from my wounds
the only cure for wounds is arrows.
The only cure for wounds is arrows
وَجهُكَyour face البَدرُthe full moon وَالغَلائِلُand the gauzy garments سُحبٌclouds
وَاللَمىand the lips' dark hue الأُثْرُthe blade's pattern وَالصَقالُand the polish اِبتِسامُa smile
Your face is the full moon, and the gauzy garments are clouds;
Your face is the full moon, your tresses are clouds
your lips' dark hue is a blade's pattern, its polish a smile.
Your saliva is rain and your smile the lightning
وَعَلىand in كُلِّevery حالَةٍcondition ماnot يُساويequate
بَينَbetween بَدريmy full moon وَبَدرِكَand your full moon الأَقوامُpeople
And in any case, people do not equate
And for every state what equals
my full moon with yours.
Between my and your full moons are people
بِتُّI spent the night أَشكوcomplaining إِلىto الظَلامِthe darkness هَواهُlove for him
فَيُرينيso it shows me البَدرَthe full moon الَّذيwhich لاnot يُسامُis bid for
I spent the night lamenting my love for him to the darkness;
I spend the night complaining to the darkness of his love
so it shows me the full moon that cannot be bargained for.
So it shows me the incomparable full moon
وَجَرىand flowed بَينَbetween ناظِريmy eye وَدُجاهُand its darkness

And between my eye, its darkness,
And between my eyes and his darkness
and my streaming tears, a conversation flowed.
Flowed my tears which became speech
أَنتَyou قِسميmy allotted lot وَلَيسَand there is not ليfor me مِنكَof you قِسمٌa share
وَكَذاand thus الحُبُّlove وَالقِلىand aversion أَقسامُapportioned lots
You are my lot, yet I have no share of you;
You are my fate and I have no fate from you
and so love and aversion are apportioned lots.
And so is love and longing for the beloved
