إِنّيindeed, I فَقَدتُI have lost أَحِبَّتيmy loved ones نَظَراfrom sight
وَوَجدتُand I found بَعدَهُمafter them التَوىruin أَثَراas a trace
Indeed, I have lost my loved ones from sight,
I have lost my loved ones from sight
and found ruin in their wake.
And found solitude in their wake
تَرَكواthey left عَلىupon عَينيmy eye دِيارَهُمُtheir dwellings
وَعَلىand upon فُؤاديmy heart الشَوقَlonging وَالفِكَراand thoughts
They left their dwellings upon my eye,
They left imprints of their homes
and longing and thoughts upon my heart.
Upon my eyes and longing in my heart
ظَعَنواthey departed بِنورٍwith a light لَستُI am not أَسأَلُهُI ask for it
لاnot الشَمسَthe sun بَعدَهُمafter them وَلاnor القَمَراthe moon
They departed with a light I do not seek
They departed with a light I do not ask for
from the sun after them, nor from the moon.
Neither sun nor moon after them
مَنwhom ذاthis one أُعاتِبُI reproach فيfor صُدودِكُمُyour turning away
حَظّيmy fortune أَمِor الواشيthe talebearer أَمِor القَدَراfate
Whom should I reproach for your turning away—
Whom can I blame for your aloofness?
my fortune, or the talebearer, or fate?
My fortune, the slanderer, or fate?
