The reproacher did not lie—no, rather, he spoke the truth.
The reproacher did not lie, nay he spoke true,
Every fresh beauty bears a threadbare pledge.
Each fresh beauty once embedded in clay was hewn.

سُبحانَ مَن قَد صاغَ ظبياً مِن عَلَقْ
I say, as he passes by me, coming into view:
When one like her passed smiling before me, I exclaimed:
Glory be to Him who fashioned a gazelle from clotted blood!
Glory to Him who created a gazelle from a clot!
وَماءِand water of عَينٍan eye نارُthe fire of قَلبٍa heart دونَهاbeneath it
وَماءِ عَينٍ نارُ قَلبٍ دونَها

And an eye’s water, with a heart’s fire beneath it,
The water of her eye, the fire of her heart beneath,
Like the neck you have clothed in flattery’s robe.
Like a necklace you have clad in a garment of splendor.
