And how often he made foes choke on the water of honed blades!

So they left choking pangs only for choking on water.

    Keen swords carry death, wearing

over their secrets a garment of flattery.

He praised him with verses whose stars

rise from your radiant glory on the horizon.

    فَما سَكَتُّ وَلَم أَبلُغ وَلم أُطِقِ

    Your kindness would not let me withhold your praise;

so I did not keep silent, yet did not reach the mark, nor was I able.

Besides this, my words, as they know,

rank among kings, while some speech is like commoners.

And my verse traces the generous man to generosity,

as my eye traces light to daybreak.

You have made me gloat over my cares, for they are perishing.

Finish them off, for foes cannot be trusted when treated gently.
