تَخَوَّفَhe feared مِنهاof her أَنto يَقولَhe should say مَتىwhen الوَعدُthe promise
وَلَيسَand there is no لَهاfor her بِالوَعدِconcerning the promise مُذsince وَعَدَتshe promised عَهدُfidelity
He feared to ask her, "When will the promise be fulfilled?"
He feared that she might ask when his promise would come true,
Yet since she promised, she has kept no faith with her promise.
Yet she had no promise from him since the day she was wed.
وَلاand not عِندَهُمwith them عِلمٌknowledge بِماof what فيin فُؤادِهِhis heart
وَلاand not عِندَهاwith her مِنof أَمرِهِhis plight ماwhat لَهاfor her عِندُwith him
And they know nothing of what is in his heart,
They knew not what was in his heart,
nor does she feel for him what he feels for her.
Nor did she know aught of his intentions toward her.
وَكُلُّand every عِتابٍreproach بَينَbetween وُدَّينِtwo affections داخِلٌincluded
وَإِلّاand otherwise فَلاthen do not تَتعَبweary yourself فَماfor … not يَأذَنُpermits الوُدُّlove
And every reproach has its place between two who love each other;
Every reproach between lovers has a place,
otherwise, do not weary yourself, for love gives no leave.
Else, do not weary yourself, for affection allows no disfavor.
وَإِنand if كانَis طَعمُthe taste العَتبِof reproach ذاpossessing حَنظَلِيَّةٍcolocynth bitterness
فَصَبراًthen be patient عَلىwith مُرٍّsomething bitter عَواقِبُهُits outcomes الشَهدُhoney
And if reproach tastes of colocynth,
And if the taste of reproach be bitter,
then bear the bitterness patiently—its outcome is honey.
Then patience over bitterness whose end is sweet.
وَكَمand how many a لَيلَةٍnight قَدindeed مَرَّpassed عَتبيmy reproach بِسَمعِهاby her ear
فَجاوَرَso lay beside عِقداًa necklace كانَwas فيat نَحرِهاher throat عِقدُa necklace
And how many a night my reproach passed by her ear,
How many a night has my reproach passed by her hearing,
so that one necklace lay beside another at her throat.
Yet it sat close by a knot that was in her throat.
وَلَمّاand when بَكَتwept عَينيmy eye لَهاfor her وَتَبَسَّمَتand she smiled
تَكاثَرَmultiplied فيهاabout her بَينَناbetween us الشَرحُexplanation وَالسَردُand recounting
And when my eye wept for her and she smiled,
And when my eye wept for her and she smiled,
explanation and recounting about her abounded between us.
Converse and intimacy multiplied between us.
وَظاهَرَهاand supported her آثارُsigns كَونِكَyour presence فيin الحَشاthe breast
بِأَنin that قَدalready بَداappeared فيin ماءِwater وَجنَتِكَyour cheek الوَقدُthe flame
And signs of your presence within the breast supported her,
The marks of your being in the wasteland were evident:
for flame had appeared in your cheek's watery sheen.
For the branding iron showed in the water of your cheeks.
وَإِلّاand otherwise فَإِنَّfor indeed الوَردَthe rose فيهِin it مَلالَةٌtedium
كَماas عَهِدواthey have known مِنهُof it وَماand not مَلَّwearied ذاthis الوَردُthe rose
Otherwise, the rose does grow tiresome,
Else the roses therein are tedious,
as they have known it to—yet this rose never does.
As they have known them, nor are those roses sated.
لَهاshe has خُلُقٌcharacter ماnot فيهِin it لِلحَمدِfor praise مَوضِعٌa place
وَلِلوَجهِand for the face مِنهاof her قُلْsay هُوَHe اللَهُGod وَالحَمدُand praise
Her character leaves no room for praise,
She has a nature that leaves no room for praise,
but for her face, recite "Say: He is God" and "Praise be to God."
And say only: “God is Most Great and All Praise is His.”
