حَبيبٍa beloved حَبيبِdear الذِكرِmention عِنديto me إِذاwhenever مَرّاit passes
Perhaps hateful reproach will awaken in me the memory
Perhaps the grievous separation will bring back memories
of a beloved whose mention is dear to me whenever it comes to mind.
Of a beloved, beloved in my thoughts whenever we met
كَأَنَّas though جُفونيmy eyelids السُحبُthe clouds وَالقَطرُand the rain أَدمُعيmy tears
وَقَدand indeed أَمطَرَتthey have rained upon فِكريmy mind فَقَدso indeed أَنبَتَit has brought forth الشِعراpoetry
As though my eyelids were clouds, and the rain my tears;
As though my eyelids were clouds and my tears rain
and they have rained upon my mind, so it has brought forth poetry.
And my thoughts poured rain and so poetry sprouted
وَعَرَّفَنيand taught me قَدريmy worth الزَمانُTime مُطالِباًdemanding
بِوِترِfor vengeance زَمانٍa time ماnot عَرَفتُI knew لَهُfor it قَدراworth
And Time has taught me my worth, demanding
And fate made me learn from time
vengeance for a time whose worth I had not known.
The value of an era I had not known before
