وَلَقَدand indeed خَلَوتُI withdrew into solitude بِعَبرَةٍwith a tear مُتَفَرِّداًalone
وَخَلَتand were alone بِقَلبيwith my heart عِندَهاat that moment أَحزانيmy sorrows
And indeed I withdrew with a tear, alone,
I wept alone in solitude
And then my sorrows were alone with my heart.
My sorrows dwelled in my heart
وَعَرَفتُand I recognized مِنfrom بَينِamong القُبورِthe graves مَكانَهُhis place
مِثلَlike الهُمومِthe cares وَقَدand already عَرَفنَthey recognized مَكانيmy place
And among the graves I recognized his place,
I knew his grave among the tombs
As cares had already recognized mine.
Like worries that know my place
حُزنٌsorrow غَدَتhave become أَعمارُهُits lifetimes نوحِيَّةٌNoah-like
وَالدَمعُand the tears كَالطَوقانِlike the deluge (apparent typo) لاnot الغُدرانِthe pools
A sorrow whose lifetimes have become like Noah's,
Sorrow whose life became lamentation
And tears like the deluge, not pools.
And tears like collars not like necklaces
وَأَناand I اِبنُson نوحٍNoah قَبرُهُhis grave الجَبَلُthe mountain الَّذيthat
ماnot كانَwas عاصِمَهُhis protector مِنَfrom الطوفانِthe deluge
And I am Noah's son, whose grave is the mountain that
I'm Noah's son, his grave the mountain
Did not protect him from the deluge.
Which could not protect him from the flood
أَتُراكَhave you, I wonder فيin دارِthe abode البَقاof eternity اِستَبطَأتَنيfound me slow to come
فَاِنظُرthen look كَأَنَّكَas though you were بيwith me فَسَوفَfor soon تَرانيyou will see me
Have you, in eternity's abode, thought me slow to come?
Do you think in the abode of eternity I delayed?
Then look—you can almost see me, for soon you will see me.
Look as if you are with me, for soon you will see me
هَذيthis الحَياةُlife أَماتَنيkilled me دَهريmy fate بِهاthrough it
فضوَدِدتُso I wished (apparent typo) لَوif only بِإِماتَتيby killing me أَحيانيwould revive me
Through this life, my fate has put me to death,
This life has killed me, so I wished
So I wished it would revive me by putting me to death.
That by killing me it would give me life
وَيَقولُand utters قَلبيmy heart فيكَabout you كُلَّevery قَصيدَةٍpoem
لِلحُزنِof grief تُخرِسُsilences ماwhat يَقولُsays لِسانيmy tongue
And my heart utters about you every poem
And my heart says in you every elegy
Of grief that silences what my tongue says.
Sorrow silences what my tongue would say
وَإِذاand when اِستَغاثَcried for help القَلبُthe heart فيكَabout you بِمُفصِحٍfor an eloquent speaker

And when the heart cries for an eloquent voice to speak of you,
And if the heart calls out in you desperately
My eyelids answer it as an echo answers.
Its fervent call is met by my eyelids’ echo
بَخِلَwas miserly اللِسانُthe tongue بِلَفظَةٍwith a word وَبِخاطِريand in my mind
ماas much as شاءَتِdesired الأَسماعُthe ears فيكَabout you مَعانِmeanings
The tongue withholds a word, while in my mind
My tongue is miserly with an expression, yet my mind
Are meanings about you, as many as ears could wish.
Said what the ears about you wished to hear
ياO دَهرَTime لَونٍa color فيin الإِساءَةِmistreatment واحِدٍsingle

أَينَwhere التَلَوُّنُchanging hues ياO أَباfather الأَلوانِof colors
O Time, of a single color in mistreatment,
O time of a single color in harm
Where is your changing hue, O father of colors?
Where is your fickleness, O father of colors?
عَزّىconsoled المُعَزّيthe comforter غَيرَهُsomeone other than him عَنover غَيرِهِsomeone other than him
وَسَلاand found solace وَأَخفىand concealed سَلوَةَthe solace الغَيرانِof the jealous one
The comforter consoled another over someone else's loss,
One comforted another about another
And found solace, hiding it as a jealous man would.
And asked and hid the comfort of others
فَاِقصِدso be moderate فَقَدfor indeed وَضَعَhas worn down الطَريقُthe road لِقاصِدٍfor one approaching
بِعَزائِكَwith consolation for you الأَرواحَthe souls فيin الأَبدانِthe bodies
So be moderate: the road has worn down, for one coming
So take aim, the path is set for one who aims
With solace for you, the souls within their bodies.
With your consolation, souls in bodies
أَمسَواthey became سُطوراًlines فيin الثَرىthe earth مَطوِيَّةًfolded away

وَقُبورُهُمand their graves مِنfrom فَوقُabove كَالعُنوانِlike a heading
They became lines folded away in the earth,
They have become lines buried in the earth
And their graves above are like a heading.
While their graves above are like titles
أَخجَلتُمُyou shamed ثِقَتيmy trust وَلَوand if كُنتُمyou were عِدىًenemies
ماnot أُخجِلَتit would have been shamed لَكِنَّكُمbut you إِخوانيmy brothers
You shamed my trust; had you been enemies,
You have shamed my certainty, and if you were enemies
It would not have been shamed—but you are my brothers.
It would not be shamed, but you are my brothers
عَرَفَknows الَّذيhe who عَرَفَknows الزَمانَTime وَأَهلَهُand its people
وَهُماand the two إِذاwhen ماindeed حُصِّلاare assessed زَمَنانِtwo Times
He knows, who has known Time and its people,
The one who knew time and its people
And, when assessed, the two are two Times.
If both are accumulated, two times
فَبَقيتُso I remained مَفقوداًlost بِغَيرِwithout مُصاحِبٍa companion
وَيَظَلُّand he remains مَوجوداًpresent بِغَيرِwithout زَمانِTime
So I remained lost, without a companion,
So I remained lost without a companion
And he remains present, without Time.
And he remained existent without a time
ليfor me مِنهُof him طَيفٌa phantom لَوif هَجَعتُI slept وَذِكرُهُand his memory
مِنهُof him عَلىduring اليَقَظاتِwaking hours طَيفٌa phantom ثانِsecond
I would have a phantom of him, were I to sleep; and his memory
I have of him a specter, if I sleep and remember him
Is a second phantom of him throughout my waking hours.
From him in my waking state a second specter
لَمnot أَنسَI forgot عَهدَكُمُyour bond عَلىdespite بُعدِthe distance المَدىthe span
وَيُقَلِّلُand diminishes النِسيانُforgetfulness بِالإِنسانِin a human being
I have not forgotten my bond with you, despite the distance,
I have not forgotten your era despite the distance
And forgetfulness diminishes a human being.
And forgetfulness diminishes man
وَتَقولُand says عَينيmy eye كَيفَhow أَنسىcan I forget ذِكرَthe memory مَنof one who

ماnot زالَceased أَسكَنَmore firmly lodged فِيَّin me مِنthan إِنسانيmy pupil
And my eye says, 'How can I forget the memory of one
My eye says how can I forget the memory of one
Who remains more firmly lodged in me than my own pupil?'
Who still resides in me more than a human?
أَنتَyou الطَليقُthe freed one مِنَfrom الحَياةِlife وَهاand here أَناI am
فيin سِجنِهاits prison أَمسَيتُI have become عَينَthe very essence العانيof a captive
You are freed from life; and here I am,
You are free of life, while here I am
In its prison, having become a captive through and through.
In its prison I have become the eye of the weak
أَهلُthe people المَصائِبِof calamities بَعدَكُمafter you أَهليmy kin كَماjust as
أَنَّthat القُبورَthe graves لِأَجلِكُمfor your sake أَوطانيmy homelands
After you, those afflicted are my kin, just as
The people of afflictions after you are my family, just as
The graves, for your sake, are my homelands.
The graves because of you are my homelands
ماnot عادَreturned دَهريmy fate مَرَّةًonce بِإِساءَةٍwith harm
وَمَتىand when بَدانيbegan by treating me قَطُّever بِالإِحسانِwith kindness
My fate never once returned with harm—
My time no longer passes with harm
And when did it ever begin with kindness toward me?
And when did it ever treat me kindly?
كُنتُمyou were حِجاباًa veil حالَintervened فيماin the space بَينَناbetween us
وَعَدِمتُكُمand I lost you فَرَأَيتُهُthen I saw it وَرَآنيand it saw me
You were a veil that stood between us,
You were a veil between us
And I lost you; then I saw it, and it saw me.
When you left I saw Him and He saw me
وَلَقيتُand I encountered ماwhat لَمnot يَكفِهِsufficed for it صَبريmy patience وَلَمand not
يَثبُتstand firm لِرَوعَةِagainst the terror ماof what جَناهُinflicted it جَنانيmy heart
And I met what my patience could not bear, nor
And I met what my patience could not withstand
Did my heart stand firm before the terror of what it inflicted.
Nor could the garden of my soul withstand the shock
أَخَوَيٍّmy two brothers لَمnot يَعرِفknew ضَنايَmy anguish سِواكُماexcept you two
ماnot أَنتُمyou أَخَوانِtwo brothers بَلbut rather أَبَوانِtwo fathers
My two brothers, none but you two knew my anguish;
I had no brothers who knew my affection but you two
You are not two brothers, but two fathers.
You were not brothers, but fathers
وَوَقَفتُand I stood فيon يَومَيكُماyour two days أَفَلاwill you not عَلىon
يَومِthe day ذَخِرتُكُماI kept you two in reserve لَهُfor it تَقِفانِyou two stand
And I stood on your two days; will you not
And I stood on your day - should I not
Stand on the day for which I had kept you in reserve?
On the day I hoarded you both stand?
أَنكَرتُI found unfamiliar بَعدَكُماafter you two الوُجوهُthe faces فَكُلُّfor every مَنone who
قَدonce كانَwas ذاpossessing وَجهٍa face لَهُhe has وَجهانِtwo faces
I found faces strange after you two; for everyone who
After you I did not recognize faces, so everyone
Once had one face now has two.
Who had a face now has two faces
فَكَأَنَّso it is as though باسِمَهاtheir smiling one الَّذيthe one who يَشكوcomplains إِلىto
قَلبيmy heart وَمُقبِلَهاand their welcoming one الَّذيthe one who وَلّانيturned his back on me
So their smiling face seems the one that complains to
It is as if the one whose name complains to my heart
My heart, and their welcoming face the one that turned away from me.
And the one whose beauty captivated me
وَسَمِعتُand I heard ماwhat قالَsaid المُسَلّيthe comforter وَهوَwhile he ليfor me
يُغريincites وَقامَand set out بِزَعمِهِas he claimed يَنهانيrestrains me
And I heard what the comforter said, while he was
And I heard what the comforter said, and he
Inciting me, though he claimed to set out to restrain me.
Tempted me, though he claimed to forbid me
عَينُthe eye الكَثيبِthe sorrowful one (apparent typo) وَسَمعُهُand his hearing فيin قَلبِهِhis heart
لاnot ماwhat اِدَّعَتclaim عَيناهُhis two eyes وَالأُذُنانِand the two ears
The sorrowful one's eye and hearing are in his heart,
The eye of the mound and its hearing in his heart
Not what his two eyes and two ears claim.
Not what his two eyes alleged, nor his two ears
وَإِلَيكَand keep yourself away عَنهُfrom him ياO عَذولُreprover فَرُبَّماfor sometimes
يُغشيenvelops الزَفيرُthe sighing لِنارِهِbecause of its fire بِدُخانِin smoke
And keep away from him, O reprover, for sometimes
And to you, O Most High, sometimes
Sighing envelops you in smoke from its fire.
The sigh overcomes the smoke of its fire
لَمnot أَنسَI forgot فَالَكَyour omen وَالبَلاءُand calamity مُوَكَّلٌis entrusted
بِالنُطقِto speech قِدماًfrom of old أَوor فَبِالإِنسانِthen to humankind
I have not forgotten your omen; calamity is bound
I did not forget, and tribulation is charged
To speech from of old—or else to humankind.
With speech, whether by foot or by man
إِذwhen قُلتُI said هاتيكَthose النِيابُthe garments (apparent typo) ذَخِرتَهاyou saved them
خِلَعَrobes of honor الطَبيبِfor the physician فَقُلتُthen I said أَوor أَكفانيmy shrouds
When I said, 'Those garments—you have saved them
When I said, “Bring those teeth you hoarded,”
As robes of honor for the physician,' I said, 'Or my shrouds.'
The doctor took off his robe, and I said, “Or my shroud.”
وَالدَمعُand tears فيin أَجفانِهِhis eyelids مُتَرَقرِقٌshimmering
وَيَرِقُّand grow tender ليfor me مِنat ذِكرِهِhis remembrance الجَفنانِthe two eyelids
And tears shimmered in his eyelids,
And tears welling in his eyelids
And at his remembrance my two eyelids grow tender.
And for me they flow from remembering the two lids
وَرَأَيتُand I saw مِنهُof him ماwhat رَأىhe saw فيin نَفسِهِhimself

And I saw in him what he saw in himself
And I saw in him what he saw in himself
At parting; then I wept for him, and he wept for me.
At the intention, so I wept him and my weeping
