وَقسّمت بِالهوى منك الحِجا بددا
Here is Umaym, her figure revealed and plain to see;
This is Umaymah whose personality was revealed
And through love she has scattered your reason into pieces.
And through love she divided the love between us into pieces

Before her departure, equip your eyelids with her image
And before the camel-driver takes her along the paths.
And before the traveler parts from her renew again

For what is your life after parting from her,
After being separated from her, how is your life?
Among us, once the driver of the riding camels chants her onward?
If the leader of the caravan departs with her, what life remains for us?

What ails my tears? Never have I concealed love
Why have I never concealed the love in my tears for Ameem
For Umaym without their flow bearing witness to it.
Except that in its flow I have borne witness to it

A heavenly maiden—if she were seen with her face unveiled
If a maiden saw her traveling
By a religious scholar, he would prostrate himself before her at once.
A scholar would have prostrated to her at that time

And if she knotted one of her fingers,
If she made rings with her delicate fingers
Its softness would let it bend and knot in that way.
They would have melted from her softness and bonded

She is the one—even if she grew distant in love or forsook me,
The one whom if she dried up in love or became estranged
I would heed no blame concerning her, nor any reproach.
I would not listen to any blame or rejection towards her

But for loving her, I would not have revealed what
If it wasn’t for her love I would not have searched for
My soul conceals, nor repaired what had gone wrong.
What my soul conceals or set right what was corrupted

And indeed, in loving her I see waywardness as sound judgment,
And I see misguidance as guidance in her love
In what I perceive of passion for her—and misguidance as guidance.
While in her passion I see error as righteousness

How often my heart has melted from parting with her and her desertion,
How my heart melted from her abandonment and estrangement
And how often it has been torn to shreds by her swaying figure!
And how it froze again from her gathering and union

So I spent the night sipping sweet saliva from her lips,
So I remained perceiving a breath from her kiss
Reviving with it what had been spent of the soul's life.
Reviving with it the diminishing spirit of my life

Saliva that resembled honey in its taste,
A saliva that narrated the taste of honey in its flavor
And musk when it entered the nostril or rose within it.
And musk, even if it penetrated the insides and ascended

The embers of love's anguish, they flared and blazed in my entrails.
The embers of passion flared up within me and ignited

I did not know from where I kissed her smile
Whether I had kissed pearls there or hailstones.
Whether I had kissed a pearl or ice from her

In fortune's choking grief, lamenting misery and hardship.
Complaining of misery and gloom in the anguish of fate
