He is grief-stricken: never do the grove's doves lament
The doves in the valley no longer coo
after the folk have gone without his doom drawing near.
After the hardships, except to mourn their loss,

Above his wasted mounts, when they low
She rises above her nest if perched
beneath the saddles, rise his moans of heartache.
Beneath the saddlebags, a hill from afar,

وَإِلى الأحبّةِ شوقهُ وغرامهُ
Toward the ruined traces go his yearning and his longing to return,
Yearning for the dwellings and inclining
and toward his loved ones, his longing and consuming love.
To loved ones, her longing and passion,

Nothing remained of him, in the midst of his youth,
Of her, in the bloom of youth
in his body but his skin and bones.
Only skin and bones remain,

O my two companions, halt with us at a spring campsite
My friend, let us stand in a wide, open space
of the tribe, its tattoo-marks showing like laurel.
Like a spear for the living, bare and erect

It showed none of its signs and markings
No signs or traits of him appeared
to the eye but its trench and its stone-heaps.
To the eye except his brightness and his banner,

نوّ الثريّا وبلُه ورهامهُ
Its newness was worn away, its trace effaced,
His youth faded and his form crumpled
by the Pleiades' rains, their downpour and their drizzle.
The fresh lily wilted and its petals scattered,

It is deserted, though months have not passed over it
He was strong and months had not passed over him
at all—what, then, when its years have elapsed?
So how could he fare when years come to pass?

Its wild herds defy it within its enclosures,
His defiance lasts in his defiance
always, and its gazelles among its cairns.
And his tranquility in his tranquility,

بِالوصلِ إلّا طيفُه ولمامهُ
And a slender, lean-waisted one—none has visited me
The dusty ashes, bent over, never visited me
in union but his phantom and his fleeting apparition.
Except as a phantom, his hemline,

The day passes in his estrangement; and when there settles
The day passes with his estrangement, and when night falls,
the wing of darkness, dreams of him freely grant his presence.
The wings of darkness allow his dreams,

I made him judge over my heart, until his decrees
He judged in my love until he exhausted
were carried out with tyranny in his judging.
With tyranny, his unjust judgments,

فَتصيبُ لبّاتِ القلوبِ سهامهُ
He shoots at hearts, catching them unawares with his arrows;
He throws hearts into disarray with his arrows
so his arrows strike the very bosoms of hearts.
And his arrows strike the cores of hearts,

And he sways in the cloak of youth when he walks,
He walks erect in the cool of youth
as though his stature were a bamboo stem.
As if his frame were a tall cypress tree,

His mouth diffuses a sweet fragrance after anguish
like musk when its seal has been removed.
Like musk when its seal has been removed,

A full moon whose light shines through his cloaks,
A full moon soothing with its coolness, its brilliance,
and his curtains, his hangings, and his tents.
Its veils, its discs, and its tents,

He denied me union, to the point that
He denied me union until he gave up
in his aloofness he does not return even a greeting.
What he refused to grant, even a greeting,

His favor and union are hard to win, in small measure
Contentment and union with him are few,
or great, whether lawful or forbidden.
Lawful and forbidden with him in abundance,

And a remote expanse, far-reaching in its bounds,
The vast space of distance roams
containing only its dust-colored gazelles and ostriches:
With nothing but a gazelle and an ostrich,

I crossed its farthest reach on full-grown, pale camels,
I have surpassed its limits with a mighty leap,
their girth-straps and belly-bands strained around their bulk.
My wrappings and belts burst from it,

And to the noble youth, how much have I sent
pearls like pearls, made lovely by their stringing!
Of pearls, like the threaded pearls of his form?

Al-Yashbe the Glorious King in whose days
days shone with the splendor of his reign.
Joy radiated with the light of his kingdom,

his Bahram lay below the heights he had attained.
None had attained what he attained in rank,

His sitting surpasses the standing of the two Hariths
His sitting surpasses the standing of others
in honor and rank—how much more his standing!
In nobility, so how then his standing?

He cleaves the battalions with his blade as though
his sword were a cloud's lightning amid the clouds.
The flash of lightning cleaves the clouds, is his blade,

The world gave him milk through your kindness, and he sipped
The world smiled on him through your charm, so he gained
blessings; his weaning did not end his suckling.
Blessings, never weaning from your teat,
