Halt, you two, and ask about Sa'da's dwelling and Sa'da,

And about times with Sa'da that brought us good fortune.

Stand amid her deserted haunts, that perhaps we

May renew a bond by recalling her days.

And who can restore my heart, which in love became her

Captive for all its days, never to be ransomed?

And the soft-bodied, bashful, fair maidens—

Anklet, collar, and necklace adorned her charms.

She resembles the white gazelle in neck and eye,

And her figure shames the supple bough of the ban tree.

Strung pearls resemble the pearls of her mouth,

And an ivory casket resembles the breast upon her chest.

A tender-bodied beauty: the sipper of her saliva could not tell

Whether what he sipped was saliva or honey.

Her anklet complained of her calf, just as

Her bracelets complained where they covered her wrist.

I see myself—I see myself—whenever her name is mentioned,

Heaving sighs and wandering distraught with love for her.

And no thought of her ever crossed my heart

But then it melted with longing and blazed.

Love for her wasted my heart; love for her left

Nothing of my body but the bones within it and skin.

And on the day we met for farewell, as they set out—

Her camel-litters, driven away at the dawn of separation—

We remained standing to say farewell, while between us

Lay secrets hidden in our hearts, never revealed.

We sought to say farewell, yet feared a watcher,

Like a thirsty man who sees water but cannot reach it.

You see us silent, while our eyes between us

Lament to one another a passion we cannot deny.

Ah, people of understanding, is there any pity for

A lonely man to whom time's calamities have come as envoys?

Time's vicissitudes assailed me and scoured me,

Polishing me through abrasion, refining me into pure coin.

    And parted me from those I love;

So away with what its decree has brought—away!

Would that I knew, when it struck me with its reversals,

Whether that was by mistake or by design.

And though I am deprived of comfort and wealth,

I surely restrain my soul from its cravings, in renunciation.

So never scorn a man while you are ignorant

Of him; test a trait of his nature by its opposite.

    إِذا جاءَ نصلُ السيف لا تنظر الغِمدا

    Ask about a man's character, not his clothing;

When the sword's blade appears, do not look at the scabbard.

And many a shimmering robe of honor has clothed an ape!

Traversing its deserts at evening and at dawn.

They saw lightning that bestowed coolness on their livers.

Clouds of bounty whose lightning and thunder never deceived.

Clouds of bounty from Falah spread abroad,

Their downpours bringing gifts from every quarter.

A noble youth who, in generosity, belied his own threats,

With his pens, until he won them through his bounty.

And loved the virgin maidens of noble deeds and glory,

    Not Hind, al-Rabab, or Da'd.

How many paths to glory, praise, and acclaim

He gained; how lavishly he gave, how much he bestowed!

And if time's reversals, with all their calamities,

Took human shape, they would become his slave.

Rejoice—may you be spared reproach—in the reign through which

You reached, in glory, the highest stars of heaven.

You sent against your foes every mighty host,

In which bare swords drove sleek steeds beneath its banner.

And when they realized the situation was grievous

For them, and their mountain of resolve had collapsed,

They had gone astray and had not followed the right path.

They came to you, all offering their necks,

At evening, when they found no escaping it.

They came while death's sea foamed around them,

Toward you, wading through armies and troops,

To a court where kings were obedient

To your command, where sheep did not fear lions.

They saw nothing but majesty shining

Upon you, and gleaming swords, helmets, and supple spears.

So you forgave the guilt they had incurred,

And garlanded them with a favor that earned you praise.

You erased rancor when you had power

Over them; the best of men is he who wipes rancor away.

And you were favored with all manner of joy,

Winning a mantle of glory and reverence.
