O my two companions, halt! O my two companions, halt!

At the vanished spring encampment of the departed company.

An abode effaced, its robe of freshness worn away

by a dust-strewing wind among the obliterating gales, as it blew.

And ask it about the gazelle whose departure poured

    streaming tears from my eyes.

A gazelle whose pastures are the garden of hearts—how often

he grazed on the heart's anemones and plucked them!

I never came asking him to satisfy a longing,

in what I sought, but he turned away and departed.

Ah, for a heart whose fire of anguish blazes,

and an eyelid's water, flowing whenever I wipe it away!

I reveal my passion—yet love for ʿĀtika is far above

being defined in words or captured in description.

And I have a sorrowful heart, forever

thirsting, yearning to kiss her smiling mouth.

A lovely maiden: when her glance wounds my heart,

the moisture of her mouth is a cure for the wounds.

She parts her lips to reveal a smile with dark gums,

as though it were pearls that had left their shells.

How sweet her mouth's saliva, and how cool it is

to its drinker—and how sweet to sip!

As though it were wine cooled by the north wind, blended

with drops from the first downpours of rain.

The waters of youth and modesty have flowed across her face,

so, with both, her face has never complained of dryness.

Her thirsty, slender waist never appeared to me

without leaving me thirsty and wasted.

And how could the shedding of my blood be laid elsewhere, when

her reddening cheek has confessed and admitted it?

Indeed, love and passion for her have whittled me down,

until my body has come to resemble the letter alif.

And a lonely expanse among the earth's passes,

barren—whoever wanders blindly through its wrath perishes.

There you hear the strains of uncanny music, when

its jinn plays from the reaches of its wastes.

You crossed it on a long-striding mount, which you would take

for a violently raging blast of the dust-scattering winds,

until you reached ʿArār, after it had loosened

the girth-straps and left the body weak.

So when I met him, I met a full moon of guidance:

if it shone against the face of blackest night, the darkness cleared.

And when I placed my hope in him, I hoped in a sea of bounty—

how often it brought forth pearls for the supplicant, how often it cast them out!

Crowned, he has won the banners of praise and gathered

the beginnings of glory, its middle reaches, and its ends.

He has climbed the slippery slopes of every height,

and ranged through them, never halting in his pursuit of them.

a generous hand that rivals rain-laden clouds and falling rain.

if lineage is the measure, he is their highest in honor.

You meet him in his seat of honor, wrapped in forbearance,

girded with praise and cloaked in glory.

If his might were to unleash its severity

one day upon Yadhbul, it would quake and tremble.

O most forgiving of men, by your nature,

toward whoever has committed offenses or done wrong,

hasten your bounty and your ample favor upon

a supplicant who came near you with praise and drew closer still.

And grant him redress against the blows of time, for I

come to you seeking justice against the blows of time.
