By God, the south wind never blew as a breeze
The southern breeze never blew,
without bringing a fragrance from Su'ad.
Bearing fragrance from Sae’d,

A tender maiden—whenever she glances at me, she inflicts
Except when she glanced at me smiling,
wounds like gashes between my ribs.
Spreading joy between my ribs,

And she passes the night heedless of love, while I spend
I spend the night consumed with love, refusing
my night a captive to passion's blaze.
To sleep in my burning passion,

How many nights have I spent weeping
and bitten by her unscathed speckled serpent.

To me, she is eternally committed,
and separation, a pledge that has never earned reproach.

Her eyes are dark against white, her eyelids languid;
The light in her eyes, the sickness of her lids,
and languor itself is a mark of beauty.
It would be unnatural if she were not flirtatious,

O lady—love is an ailment for a young man—
O you, my love is an affliction for the young man
what harm would it do your heart to be merciful?
Why should your heart not show mercy?

and a hell from aloofness and aversion.
Then abandoned and shunned me, creating hell,
