A man in love, passionately enamored, his heart anguished.

You charged him to be patient, though he is love-dazed and infatuated.

He now makes his weeping resound amid separation,

at the boundary, since that departure and advance grew urgent.

Whenever he checks a tear from his eyes,

streaming tears overflow from him upon his cheek.

O love, you gladdened him on departure day, though

tears, torment, and sorrow had seized him.

He calls loudly to his loved ones on the day of their parting,

when they turned away as separation neared, and departed.

He keeps calling to them from behind their departing caravan,

so that they might turn aside; yet they neither turned aside nor stopped.

    لم يلهِها في المسيرِ المهمهُ القذفُ

    Every swift she-camel bore Saʿdā onward and pressed ahead;

the far-stretching wilderness did not distract her on the journey.

She departed, and on the day of her leaving he did not receive from her

    any farewell—that love-dazed, anguished youth.

A tender maiden whose sheer gowns let her radiance shine through,

as the shell lets the pearl's light shine through.

So, what a gazelle she is! Wherever she roams,

she grazes the gardens of my heart and plucks from them.

Graceful, supple of limb, swaying as she walks,

her side is so soft it almost bends upon itself.

    في ثَغرِها درٌّ في خصرها هيفُ

    In her tresses is magic; in her gaze, dark eyes with brilliant whites;

in her mouth are pearls; in her waist, slenderness.

    O rider of a sturdy, broad-cheeked, powerfully built she-camel,

that folds up the plains in her night journey and crosses trackless land,

turn her aside and make her kneel at the watering place in

the gravel plain of Maqniyāt, where the people gather.

And make for that palace, where rise

toward the sky its towers and chambers.

And single out Abū al-Ṭayyib for unalloyed praise, for

there, whoever approaches with praise wins favor.

That generous man: never has my hope

in him, throughout my life, grown weak or lean.

And how could I deny a kindness from him, when he has

a hand that showers me with rain in torrents?

How much long-held wealth came from them, from him, in my hardship,

out of his prosperity, unpledged, and newly acquired wealth as well!

Pure in character, lavish in bounty—his glories

shine so brightly that night's darkness almost lifts.

He longs for glory and noble deeds, just as

the lovesick, shuffling lover longs for soft, full-bodied women.

An ocean of generosity, never hidden from us,

so we draw from the depths of its current.

    لا أَنثني لا ولا عَن ذاك أنحرفُ

    I shall show him gratitude throughout all time;

I shall not turn back—no—nor stray from that.

Pure in honor, he never takes refuge in defilement,

like the lion in its lair, whose food is not carrion.

Glory and far-reaching sovereignty exalt him together,

and bright swords, dusky spears, pens, and scrolls.

On his cheerful face is moisture from the rain,

no dryness ever overtakes it throughout his days.

Thus forgiveness and pardon come from him when he has power,

for whoever comes, guilty of wrongdoing.

A sword himself, and in his hand a sword with which he strikes,

like lightning, it flashes in battle and snatches away.

    قلوبُ أعداهُ خوفاً منه ترتجفُ

    Time has proclaimed him a master to whom all turn;

his enemies' hearts tremble in fear of him.

O valiant king, in whom have taken pride

    glories, reverence, and honor,

you are the noble hero under whose rule

a mother of justice now gains redress against wrongs (wording uncertain).
