O spring dwelling, laid waste by its decay,

After the companions left, decay lingered long within.

    فتكنّسته خنسهُ وظباؤهُ

    Its graceful maidens—its wild cattle and gazelles—departed;

Then its wild cattle and gazelles made it their lair.

Receive a greeting of peace from a sorrowful, lovesick man,

Whose passions have kept him from consolation.

Love-stricken, his loved ones gone far from him, he shed

His tears, and his entrails were torn apart.

Heaving with sighs, his heart's comfort

Is union with loved ones; separation is his misery.

His longing cry rises whenever his camels moan to him,

And his weary mounts rumble beneath their saddles.

I kissed the rose of his cheek, and it flushed

With bashfulness, as his modesty suffused his cheeks.

Alone among mankind is its sickness and its cure.

The glances of his languid eyes are its disease,

And the sweet moisture of his smiling mouth its remedy.

And his smiling teeth are like daisy blossoms,

And fragrant blossoms seem to be his scent.

Intoxicated: his abandonment and rejection bring despair

Of him, which his playfulness and favor dispel.

And a dark cloud whose tears gush forth; its fire

Is in its belly wherever it is, and so is its water.

A full moon shines when its face is veiled,

So its veil and mantle turn translucent with its light.

    Successive seasons of life-giving rain.

And its east wind fills the horizons of the sky.

As though Falah's bounty were the downpour of its clouds,

When its downpour and life-giving rain resounded.

A king whose heaven of glory rose in nobility,

Until his heaven rose above the sky.

And a youth beside whom the sea is scant in gifts,

And its splendor seems slight to his visitors.

Hatim's bounty and generosity have been put to shame

In this age by his bounty to us and his generosity.

His dwellings have become a pasture for delegations,

And his courtyard has become a sanctuary for the fearful.

His sheep felt at ease with the wolf in the pastures.

And destiny followed the course of his pens,

And his judgments governed its affairs.

O king, to whom acknowledgment has been given

    Of his excellence, with praise, by his enemies;

And his towers rose with him above the sky,

And his steeds and weary camels vied jealously for him.

I have now brandished you as an Indian-forged sword,

Whose cutting power will not turn back short of the goal.
