You revived my vanished dreams and nights,

Have you, then, a tale of my ardent longings?

O Kaaba of my imaginings, and hermitage,

In whose shade I chanted my verses to beauty.

To love belonged the first poems I sang,

And to beauty, through them, my earliest messages.

Over you, O valley of my dreams, I stood watching

The specter of events passing after a tragedy.

I take shelter beside the rocks, alone,

Weeping for an evening gone and for nights.

The nights since then have changed the course of our lives,

And calamities have left us a few scattered remnants.

The heart looked about in a cold, dark night,

Weeping for your radiant, shining nights,

And memories of the past that it revisits

Among the fields and the shores of lakes.

How long my moans sang to the rocks,

And how strongly my sighs echoed to the waves!

O heart, the haunts of youth's valley have changed,

And lie deserted of its beautiful maidens.

No longer do the streams sing to them, flowing in chains,

Nor do the groves flutter with radiant maidens.

They have withered from the valley's east to its west,

So no phantom of fancy wanders among them.

    لكنهُ الحبُّ ذاك القاهرُ العاتي

    There is no solace in your life to take refuge in;

But it is love—that overpowering, ruthless one.

    إن اللياليَ ملأى بالمفاجاتِ

    Its once-quiet assaults have taken you by surprise;

Indeed, the nights are full of surprises.

Ah, the lake! Who visits its shore,

And who whispers my confidences to the valley?

And who brings back to us the phantoms of its night,

And the brief moments we gained upon it,

And seclusion along its banks, while there played

The east wind's hand with its embroidered fringes?

A lone tall tree on the shore enfolds us,

    With the embrace of two parted souls in gardens on high;

    And hearts have conversations, answered

By the birds' responsive laments in the shade of the groves.

O night whose stars went unnoticed by us,

In a skiff between shores and deep waters,

It glides with us late at night, the wind propelling it,

Like a star swimming in halos on high.

And along the shores the oar has a song,

Which the surf pours out in magical waves.

How blissful a world it was, and how blissful we were

In its clear night, or in its wintry dawn!

The visions of its past have passed, leaving nothing

But the brooding silence of its sorrowful nights,

And some of the yearning and vengeance of my heart's recesses.

Alas for my ribs, with my passion and my vengeful furies!

O heart's cry, have you made your echo heard?

Who is there to answer the echo in the depths of a wasteland?

Roam the deserts of my days, for they lie empty

Of springs of water, and of the shade of oases.

My heart and mouth perished there of thirst,

And the eye lost its way there, pursuing my aims.

Even the storms turned deaf to my calls,

So they do not echo my cries back across the days.

O you who killed my youth in its bloom,

And went on mocking my tears and moans,

You robbed my early days of their joys,

So I found no delight in my desires and pleasures.

So leave my sorrowful heart to flutter over

My bygone nights—and you, enjoy what is to come.

Leave me on the rock of the past; perhaps in it lies

My deliverance from passion and yearning!
