إذاwhen داعبَcaressed الماءُthe water ظلَّthe shadow الشَّجرْof the trees
وغازلَتِand flirted with السُّحْبُthe clouds ضوءَthe light القمرْof the moon
When the water caressed the shadow of the trees,
When water caresses the shade of trees,
and the clouds flirted with the moonlight,
And clouds flirt with moonlight,
وردَّدتِand echoed الطيرthe birds أنفاسَهاtheir breaths
خوافقَfluttering بينbetween الندىthe dew والزَّهَرْand the blossoms
and the birds echoed their breaths,
And birds echo their breaths,
fluttering between the dew and blossoms;
Matching the dew and flowers.

تناجيcommunes with الهديلthe cooing وتشكوand laments القدرْfate
and a ringdove lamented for love,
A lovelorn gazelle moans,
communing with the cooing and lamenting fate;
Whispering to the streams and lamenting fate.
ومرَّand passed علىover النهرِthe river ثغرُthe mouth النسيمof the breeze

and the breeze's lips passed over the river,
The breeze passes over the river,
kissing every sail that passed;
Kissing every sailing vessel.

and the earth brought forth from its night
The land reveals from its night
charms of differing forms—
Beauties of varying forms.

كأنَّas though الظلامَthe darkness بهاof it ماnot شعرْwas aware
there was a willow in the darkness,
A willow there in the gloom,
as though the darkness had not noticed it.
As if darkness never knew it.

I took my place in its shade,
I took my place in its shade,
my heart adrift, my gaze forlorn.
My heart a wanderer, my gaze sad.

I sweep my gaze across the sky,
I glance across the sky,
and bow my head, absorbed in thought.
Lost in thought, head bowed.

I gaze at your face beneath the date palms,
I see your face under the palm trees,
and hear your voice beside the river,
And hear your voice by the river,

وتشكوand complains of الكآبةُmelancholy منيbecause of me الضجرْweariness
until the darkness tires of my loneliness,
Until the gloom wearies my loneliness,
and melancholy complains that I weary it,
And melancholy tires of me.

and all beings marvel at my bewilderment,
All things wonder at my confusion,
and the predawn stars grow fearful of me.
And dawn stars pity me.
