وكأنَّك الرَّوحُ الشقيقُ التوأمُ
As though Ibrahim were your apparition, standing before us,
As if the ghost of Abraham appeared to them
and you were the kindred spirit, the twin.
And as if you were the twin kindred soul.

O commander of the victorious army, glory in it;
O leader of the conquering army, spur it on
peoples are honored by armies like yours.
For it is with the like of your army that nations are honored.

The earth knows it and bears witness that it is
The earth knows it, bears witness that it is
a torrent when steel flashes, and a great eagle.
A torrent when the iron flashes and helmets tremble.

Or the Ancient House and Well of Zamzam?

The sword etched its lines as blades probed?

Had pirates not conspired against it,
Were it not for pirates who conspired against him
this brand would not have scarred Navarino.
Navarino would not have known this harbinger of fate.

Forgive what time has done, for it is
Forgive what time has wrought, for anguish
hardship passing over peoples, and blessings.
Passes over nations, and so does prosperity.

And breathe into it a surge of your spirit's strength,
Breathe into it from the might of your spirit a chapter
whose onslaught strikes the scorner, who recoils.
Its insolent foes strike down in defeat.

يُلْحَى النبيلُ بفعلِهِ ويُذَمَّمُ
For gentleness springs from nobility of soul, yet sometimes
For gentleness is the mark of noble souls, and perhaps
a noble man is reproached for his deed and condemned.
The noble's own actions debase and discredit him.

We are indeed in an age whose advocates' speech is
We live in an age whose preachers speak
piety, yet politics commits sin.
Devotion, though politics still corrupts.

And behind every cloud on the horizon
stands a vast army of men at the ready.
Lies an army of those waiting and well-armed.

They said: 'A youth who fell in love with nature and fed himself
They said: "A lad who loved nature and was nourished
on wondrous poems, utterly enamored,
On the curiosities of poetry, a wanderer."

Seeking out the heights of the spheres, determined.

I am the man you claimed; yet I am a poet
I am the one they claimed, except I am a poet
who has pleased eloquence with what he fashions and depicts.
Who contents rhetoric however it is molded and fashioned.

I have built its new form upon the old,
I built on the ancient its modern form
and raised from its structure what they demolished.
And raised up what they had demolished.

Poetry, to me, is a heavenly rapture,
Poetry to me is a transcendent rapture
and the radiance of a cup no mouth has kissed,
And the rays of a cup no lips have kissed.

with which the thundering clouds sing to the mountains.
The plaintive clouds have sung to the mountains.

I sent it forth on the day of the call, and imagined it
I sent it forth on the day of the call and left it
fire, and imagined the earth stained with blood.
Fire, and left the earth crimson with blood.

Your throne summoned it, and it burst forth in thoughts;
Your throne called it, so it stirred sentiments
so I came to interpret their stirrings.
And I interpreted its import and conveyed it.

I raised my head to the sky and thought myself
I lifted my head to the sky and imagined
reaching for the distant star and stringing it into verse.
Myself grasping the distant stars, versifying.

Accept my song, then, if you are gracious, for it is
So accept my ode if you would grace it - it is
the voice of youth, and its blazing spirit.
The voice of youth, its ardent soul.

And farewell my King! - to the nation which
finds shelter, strength, and safety in you!
In your shadow finds refuge, pride, and safety.
