حَبيبةُbeloved قلبيmy heart نَأَتْgrew distant دَارُهاher home
وَلَمْand did not تَنْأَgrow distant عَنِّيfrom me وَعَنْand from نَاظرِيmy sight
My heart's beloved—her home lies far away,
The darling of my heart, her house came near,
Yet she is not far from me or from my sight.
Yet she stayed far from me and from my sight,
أرَىI see وَجْهَهَاher face مُشْرِقًاradiant بالجَمَالِwith beauty
يُطِلُّlooks out منfrom الشَّاطِئِthe shore الآخَرِthe other
I see her face radiant with beauty,
I see her face shining with beauty,
Looking out from the other shore.
Beaming from the other bank,
هُوَit النَّهْرthe river يَفْصِلُseparates ماwhat بَيْنَنَاbetween us
مُدِلًّاboasting بتَمْسَاحِهِof its crocodile الغَادِرِtreacherous
It is the river that keeps us apart,
It is the river separating us,
Boasting of its treacherous crocodile.
Lying with its treacherous crocodile,
تَوَسَّدَpillowed its head on رَمْلَتَهُits sand شَاخِصًاstaring
إليَّat me وَمَاand not كُنْتُI was بالخائِرِfainthearted
It pillowed its head on the river's sand, staring
Resting on its sandy bed looking up at me,
At me—but I was not fainthearted.
And I was not one to despair,
إليهاtoward her عَلَىin رَغْمِهِdefiance of it فَلْأَخُضْso let me wade through
غَوَارِبَthe crests of تيَّارِهِits current الثائِرِraging
Toward her, in defiance of it, let me plunge through
Despite it, I will cross
The crests of its raging current.
The currents of its raging waters,
إذَاwhen ماever (emphatic) تَقَاذَفَنِيtosses me about مَوْجُهُits waves
وسَالَand flowed عليover بَدَنيmy body الضَّامِرِslender
Whenever its waves toss me about
Whenever its waves tossed me,
And flow over my slender body,
And its water flowed over my weary body,
مَضَيْتُI went on كَأَنِّيas though I عَلَىupon مائِهِits water
أُنِيلُI give الثَّرىthe earth قَدَمَيْthe two feet of عَابِرِa wayfarer
I press on as though, upon its waters,
I went on as if walking on its water,
I were setting a wayfarer's feet upon the earth.
My feet reaching the shore as they pass,
لَقَدْindeed حَالَturned into يَابِسَةًdry land ماؤُهُits water
بسلطَانِby the power of هَذَاthis الهَوَىlove السَّاحِرِbewitching
Its water has indeed become dry land
Its waters had dried up,
Through the power of this bewitching love.
By the power of this enchanting love,
وصيَّرنيand transformed me سِحْرُthe magic of هَذَاthis الهَوَىlove
وبيand within me قوةُthe strength of القَادرِthe mighty one الظَّافِرِvictorious
And the magic of this love has transformed me,
And the magic of this love,
And within me is a mighty victor's strength.
Gave me the might of the Capable Conqueror,
ألاbehold إنَّindeed سُلْطَانَthe power of هذيthese المياهِwaters
ليَعْنُوsurely bows لِسُلْطانِهَاto her power القاهِرِoverwhelming
Behold, the power of these waters
Know that the power of these waters,
Surely bows to her overwhelming power.
Is to capitulate to her supreme power.
