لعبتْplayed برأسِيwith my head نشوةُintoxication الفرحِjoy!
Is it my soul that dwells with you—or my phantom?
Is it my soul residing in you? Or my ghost?
Joy's intoxication has gone to my head!
The ecstasy of joy has played with my mind!
ياO حانةَtavern of الأرواحsouls، ماwhat صنعتْhas done
بالرُّوحِto the soul فيكِwithin you صبابةُardent longing القدحِthe cup
O tavern of souls, what has
O tavern of spirits, what has
the cup's ardor done to the soul within you?
The drink's rapture done to the soul in you?
ماwhat is wrong للسماءِwith the sky أديمُهاits surface لهَبٌflame؟
إنَّsurely الفجرَdawn لمhas not يَلُحِappeared!
What ails the sky? Its surface is flame.
Why is the sky aflame with its expanse?
Dawn? Surely dawn has not yet appeared!
It's dawn! Dawn has not yet appeared!
ولِمَand why البحيرةُthe lake مثلماas though سُجِرَتْwas set ablaze
أوor فُجِّرَتْwas made to gush منfrom عرقِthe vein of منذَبحِone slaughtered!
And why is the lake as though set ablaze,
And why is the lake boiling
or made to gush from the vein of one slaughtered!
As if it erupted from the sweat of a slaughter?
نارٌfire تطيرُflies، وموكبٌand a procession صَخِبٌclamorous
منof كلevery ساهيdreamy in اللحظِgaze منسرحِcarefree
Fire flies, and a clamorous procession
A flying fire, and a noisy parade
of every dreamy-eyed, carefree soul.
From every blithe moment unleashed

But for my neighbor's smile, and a mouth
Were it not for my neighbor's smile, and a mouth
drawing near to me with a gladdened heart,
That comes close to me with an open chest

فيamid قهقهاتِthe guffaws of الساخرِthe mocker الوقحِinsolent
I would have taken it for Rome, seething with flame
I would have thought it “Rome” swirling in flames
amid the guffaws of the insolent mocker.
In the mockery of the vulgar and impudent

ومنand from الذهولِbewilderment طرائفُcuriosities of المُلَحِwitticisms
Elation possessed me and left me dazed,
An arrogance possessed me, which stupefied me
and from bewilderment come curious witticisms.
And from stupor, the witticisms of jokes
أأناam I الغريبُthe stranger هناhere وملءُand the fullness of يديmy hand
أعطافُthe curves of هذاthis الأغيَدِthe lithe one المرِحِmerry؟
Am I the stranger here, while my hand is filled
Am I the stranger here with my hands full
with the curves of this lithe, merry beauty?
Of the folds of this playful attire?
خفَقتْfluttered علىover وجهيmy face غدائرُهاher tresses
فجذبتهاso I drew her close بذراعِwith the arm of مجترحِa sinner
Her tresses fluttered across my face,
Her tresses fluttered on my face
so I drew her close with a sinner's arm.
So I pulled her with an amputated arm
لمdid not أدرI know، وهيَwhile she تُديرُserves ليfor me قدحيmy cup،
منfrom أينwhere مُغتبَقيmy evening draught ومُصطبحيand my morning draught
I did not know, as she served me my cup,
I did not know, as she handed me my drink,
whence came my evening draught and my morning draught.
Where I was inebriated and awake
وشداand sang المغنِّيthe singer، فاحتشدتُso I readied myself لهاfor her
كمhow many للغناءِfor song لديَّI have منof مِنحِgifts
And the singer sang, so I readied myself for her—
And the singer trilled, so I gathered around her
how many gifts I have for song!
How much song I have as a gift!
عَرَضَتْshe offered بفاكهةٍwith fruit محرَّمةٍforbidden
وعرضتُand I offered، لمdid not أنطِقْI speak ولمand did not أبَحِI disclose
She made an offer of forbidden fruit,
She offered forbidden fruit
and I offered too; I neither spoke nor disclosed a thing.
And I offered – I did not speak nor explain
ياO رَبِّmy Lord، صُنْعُكَYour handiwork كلُّهُall of it فِتَنٌtemptations
أينwhere الفرارُescape، وكيفand how مُطَّرحيmy retreat!
O Lord, all Your handiwork is temptation!
O Lord, all Your creation is seduction
Where can I flee, and how find a place of retreat!
Where to flee, and how am I laid down!

These marvels—You are their Creator,
These masterpieces, You are their Creator
from the unclad to the clothed.
Between unveiled and veiled

«تاييسُ» لم تعبَثْ براهبها

لكنَّهُ أشفى على البُرَحِ
Thaïs did not trifle with her monk,
“Thais” did not toy with her monk
but he came to the brink of anguish,
But he was infatuated to the point of illness

Between locked secrets
and knocking at a door that would not open.
And knocking on a door not yet opened

Beauty appeared to him, and he revered it,
Beauty presented itself to him so he aggrandized it
and saw You in it, and went mad with joy.
And saw You in it, so he went mad from joy
أتَرىwould You consider معاقبتيpunishing me علىfor قدَرٍa fate
لولاكbut for You لمwould not يُكتَبْbe decreed ولمand would not يُتَحِbe made possible؟!
Would You punish me for a fate
Do You think my punishment matches
that, without You, would not have been decreed or made possible?!
Were it not for You it would not be prescribed nor implemented?!

Indeed, I worshiped You in the fruit of a lip,
I worshipped You in the paradise of a lip
and a hand, and a face radiant in its whiteness.
And a hand, and a bright shining face

And if I could, I would make my rosary
And if I could, I would make my prayer beads
of the fruit of breasts—and it would be sublime among rosaries.
Fruit of breasts, most excellent in praising!
