I brought my eyes close to the radiant light,

And raised my brow toward the black flame.

And I walked in the valley, its rocks tearing

My foot, while thorns made my right hand bleed.

And I ran toward the water, which was near me,

Then it receded and turned my thoughts back to the mirage.

    فوقفتُ، فارتدَّتْ هنالك دوني

    And a cloud appeared to my eye in the sky;

So I stopped; there it turned back, short of me.

And I listened to the breezes as they sang,

Then heard the crash of the mad storm.

O morning, why is the sun not shining?

O night, why is the star not visible?

O fire, what ails the fire between my ribs?

O light, where is the light that filled my eyelids?

Day departed with my bewilderment and gloom,

And evening came with my tears and sorrows.

Even nature turned away and feigned deafness,

And turned cold toward the wretched fugitive.

If I have no refuge in your tenderness,

To whom, then, shall I confide my pleading and longing?

You chose a captive's life for me, but I could not endure

Patiently, and bondage drove my madness wild.

So you made me free-winged again, and thought I had

An infatuated lover's madness for the light.

And you pointed me toward the sky, yet I did not fly,

And answered with the gaze of a caged bird.

It had forgotten the sky and no longer knew a world

Over which years of captivity had cast a veil.

Indeed, the age of wandering has passed, and my life has come

To you, with my yearning and infatuation.

After you, I found nothing to delight my eyes

In the gardens; nothing there enchants me.

So I called out, seeking inspiration in my old melodies,

But they quavered and stumbled over my groans.

    حتى الغصون غدونَ غير غصونِ

    And I descended, seeking shelter in the shadows, but they spurned me;

Even the boughs were boughs no longer.

So I returned to the old nest, with grief within me

Overwhelming me, and humiliation laying hold of me.

When they saw it, my eyes filled with tears from

Pain, and my heart cried out after its stillness.

And memory bore me along, and I began to disbelieve

My eye, and to doubt my certainty before it.

And I awoke from delirium; what I saw left me with

The bowed head of the despondent, and the silence of the sorrowful.

So open for me the door you closed

Against me, and bring the fetter without holding back.

Let me slake my heart with the wine of contentment,

And lull my eyes to sleep upon the dawn of tenderness.

And bring back to the bondage of ardent love a fugitive

Who has returned from a journey through the black nights,

Who has spurned a free life apart from you,

And come to you seeking it with a prisoner's eye.
