bearing wonders from land and sea,

and from all things new and ancient.

I have come to lay it at your feet

now, with a yearning stranger's eagerness,

weaving from it a crown about your head

and a sash for your slender form.

into your ears as one pours nectar.

The vine bore witness: how often I pressed its fruit

and filled the goblets from my ewer.

The land bore witness: I left no laurel

    upon spring's leafy mantle.

worthy of your temples, fit to grace them.

Indeed, Nature was bewildered by my night journeys

to her every night, and my nocturnal visits,

and my morning forays upon her, like a shepherd

from Asia, or an African hunter,

    or a winged god appearing

in the myths of a Greek poet.

My night! My night! You have committed sins

until you bore what you could not bear.

So revel, and drink the last drops of a cup

whose wine flowed from the very depths of my veins!

    on fate's slender dagger!
