O conqueror of death, how many secrets does the soul possess?

Iron bowed to it, and fire submitted.

And the sea feared it, though itself a tyrant,

Defiant against the rocks' blows, overpowering.

It embraced you as an exemplary tale and a sacrifice

That no chronicles contained nor any accounts recounted.

A combatant cast you into the sea's expanses,

His vital spots concealed, quick to flee when terror strikes.

His missiles lay in wait for you; yet had

Your eyes fallen upon him, no fate could have saved him.

He creeps through the whales' swimming grounds, slipping stealthily,

And the abyss is dark, and the sea's breast churns.

    Like an earthworm that sunlight kills;

Yet how many garden flowers have been killed by it!

The ship sank with you, save for a head raised high,

To which glory accords veneration and reverence.

And the sea received a breast; when it touched it,

The mountains of waves almost came crashing down upon it.

And every lofty structure vanished, save a cap,

A remembrance of lofty honor, a keepsake.

You cast it off; the waves received the head it had encircled,

As laurel received the conqueror's brow.

And were the age of miracles restored through it,

A sea would part for it, and a current turn back.

As though it were an oration whose cadences struck awe,

The worlds its listeners and spectators.

It says: “May I have no master, nor a cry be raised

By war in his name, if vengeance is not taken.”

O son of the seas, an infant in their swimming grounds,

And a youth who favors and chooses mighty undertakings,

What is the world of water? O captain, describe it to us,

For no thoughts can encompass it in imagination!

And what is a young man's life there? Is it amusement

And repose, or sudden shocks and dangers?

When the ship dances amid its waves

To chants sung by a hurricane,

And its music saddens the clouds, so they embrace,

And curtains are lowered from the shooting stars' chambers,

While you gaze beyond the horizon, smiling,

As one far from home gazes when his home appears,

Immersed in a sweet dream, unfolded

From night's summit by tempests and rains.

    كم في ليالِيهِ للعشَّاقِ أسمارُ

    O lover of the sea, tell of its charms;

How many evening tales its nights hold for lovers!

What is a summer night upon it? What is its tale?

For summer is wine, melodies, and poems.

When breezes descend from its horizons,

And lights shine through the windows of darkness,

And there approach, stripped of their gauzy robes,

Virgin brides, daughters of the jinn—

The age-old preoccupation of captains sailing by night,

By whom evenings and predawn hours are brightened.

They fill your cup to the brim with aged wine,

The sea is its cavern, and time its vintner.

While you, heedless of them, are absorbed in a ship,

Whose bells sound like a lyre in the ear.

The beloved's voice—her inner feelings overflowing,

And voyages of longing have set her swaying.

Ah, your heart's anguish when her towering structure collapsed,

While the storm raged and the waves roared!

You were taken unawares by written fate; then wandered

Your eyes, reading, while the waves were lines of script.

You both entered the sea as your grave; when it embraced you,

Trees of coral fluttered above it.

The two lovers slept in its resting place and laid their heads

Side by side, with neither humiliation nor shame!

    Deaths of self-sacrificing men, cherished

By independent freemen beyond the sea.

A death like life: whenever it is remembered,

Lifetimes are renewed for you through the generations.

It is the pride of a people whose nature includes

The making of men whenever dangers stir them.

The seas are theirs, with all that their shores enclose,

And all that gulfs and abysses conceal.

A gallery of glory, upon whose walls are raised

Statues and memorials to the immortals.

You entered through its gate and crossed its courtyard,

And walked within it in the footsteps of those who went before.

    رخامهُ الدهرُ، والتَّاريخُ حَفَّارُ

    A monument glories in your name within its sanctuaries;

Its marble is time, and history its engraver.
