My brother, the oppressors have overstepped the bounds.

So armed struggle is a duty, and so is sacrifice.

Shall we let them rob Arabhood

Of its ancestral glory and preeminence?

And not without the clash of swords

Will they answer a voice or echo of ours.

    فليسَ لَهُ، بَعْدُ، أن يُغْمدا

    So draw your sword from its scabbard;

For it must no longer be sheathed.

    My brother, O unbowed Arab,

I see today as our appointed time, not tomorrow.

My brother, the East has come forth as a nation

That repels error and revives right guidance.

My brother, in Jerusalem we have a sister

For whom the slaughterers have readied their knives.

We endured their treachery, though we were strong,

And we were a doom lying in wait for them.

We rose upon them like the onset of death,

So they scattered like dust and came to nothing.

My brother, rise toward the qibla of the two Easts,

That we may defend the church and the mosque.

Jesus the martyr, upon her soil,

    Embraces Ahmad in his army.

My brother, rise toward her; let us cleave through the fray,

Through crimson blood and thundering flame.

    فأوردْ شَبَاها الدّمَ المُصْعدا

    My brother, the swords thirst for battle;

So bring their edges to drink the upwelling blood.

My brother, if my blood flows in her soil,

And I close my hand upon her pebbles,

And death calls, and the sword goes mad,

And the kindled blaze flares up within her,

Then search for a free soul

That refused to let the enemy pass over it.

And take the banner of truth from a clenched hand

That battle has burnished and generosity has nurtured.

And kiss a martyr upon her soil

Who called upon God in her name and died a martyr.

Palestine, the young redeem your land with their lives,

And exalted are the self-sacrificing fighter and the one redeemed.

    فإمَّا الحياةُ وإمَّا الرَّدى

    Palestine, our breasts shield you;

    So either life—or death.
