We loved statues and worshipped images,

And we were enraptured by every passing vision.

And we fashioned verse for you—youth's love,

And the song of hopes, and remembrance's sorrow.

    Immortal kisses sang of it,

And it sang to their novel rhythm.

And we came to you with love's dominion,

And the throne of hearts, and fate's decree,

    With hearts as riotous as

The wind's hand among the leaves of trees.

While you, on your horizon, tranquil-eyed,

Look out upon the splendours of thought.

You drew near; we said, “Dreamers' visions!”

Then, when you grew distant, we mistrusted our sight.

And over you hovered, with their lights,

Lamps like the eyes of flowers.

They followed your steps along the road,

As a guide seeks out a trail.

They kiss the footprints left by your feet,

As an idolater kissed the stone.

Beauty walked around you in a procession,

With the banner of triumph fluttering above it.

    Your bosom embodied its sovereignty,

Like a valley's giant who defied danger,

With two breasts facing the sky,

As though they were suckling the moon.

You rose above the language of writers,

And the splendour of every poem conceived,

Save for a poet in the corners of life:

Its delights invited him, but he declined.

He bent over his cup, and sought out

Night's echo, in the last moments.

He gazed where his dreams await

Your phantom at the awaited rendezvous!
