The radiant moon journeyed by night among the stars,

pondering the depths of darkness beneath him.

A caller hailed him from the valley of the heart-free,

in the voice of a lover cautious in life,

saying: “O wonder of beauty and youth,

and loveliest dream of full-breasted nights!

I am the faithful lover when darkness enfolds me,

and your watcher among the piercing stars.

Ah, were I free as your light, to ascend

your worlds, filled with wonders of every kind!

Would that I possessed the treasure of your smiles, which

you scatter through the universe with no one counting!”

The light listened to him in joyful serenity,

and spread a ray of tenderness over the valley.

He searched through clouds and water and earth,

but nowhere there saw a human face.

    فأين تُرى ألقاكَ أم كيف تلقانِي؟

    He cried to him: “My friend, my gaze has gone astray;

where, I wonder, may I find you, or how do you find me?”

    وراءَ زجاجيها أخذتُ مكانِي

    He signaled to him: “I am here beneath my balcony;

behind its two glass panes I have taken my place.

The cold would not let me stand to greet the night

or descend into the valley where you could see me.

For love, enough from a lover devoted to you

is that my eyes take their fill of your tender radiance!”

The light cast a bewildered glance upon him,

then turned away with a mocker's smile,

and said: “My friend, you have misunderstood me.

Ah, how often poetry is uttered by no poet!

I am the shackled, weary one whose road has lengthened—

    a captive's road in a captor's keeping.

The sun's mill tugs at me whenever

I stop, and the whips of fate drive me onward.

My smile is nothing but tears of flame

that glitter on a haggard, uncovered face.

So leave my world alone, O marvel of love:

before you, my eyes had never met such marvels!”

The radiant moon sank deeper into thought,

and passed a land of grass and waters.

From it a suppliant lover communed with him,

as a Sufi communes with the apparition of a god,

saying: “O you who show me every night

the beauty of a face, wondrously fair and proud!

The light of his brow resembles this radiance,

though among people he has no equal.

The shadows trace for me his phantom image,

and I draw near to embrace or kiss his lips.

I wished I could pillow your cheek on my palm,

your breast fluttering, your eyelid dreamy.”

The beam fluttered joyfully over the valley,

and called back to him from among the shadows:

“Move these branches away from you, that perhaps

I may greet a face made dear by your love.”

He answered: “O delight of my eyes, I

have chosen a sandhill by the pool's shore.

When gazing skyward tires my eyes,

and I steal a furtive glance toward the stars,

on the water's surface lies a lover's chance

to see you near, though distant is your dwelling.

Alone beside it, I watch you, more perfect in loveliness

and more richly endowed with beauty's magic!”

The light's smile ebbed away in utter bewilderment,

and he cried: “My confidant, you have belittled my course!

    وما لغديرٍ أن يُمثِّلَ صورتي

    The universe is my mirror, the display of my charms;

no little pool can portray my image.

Lovers look only toward a world

that magnifies every little thing in the beloved.

I would spare the one whose beauty you likened me to

a face as unyielding as my rock.

    أنا الحمة السَّوداءُ، رأْدَ الظهيرةِ

    I am white charcoal when darkness enfolds me;

I am black rock at high noon.

So leave the world of celestial spheres; be content with deep water,

    and woo every guileless fish!”

While the light wandered amid his splendors,

and this universe lay drowned in his mockery,

he saw a figure near a fire, as though

bidding farewell to a phantom lost to his sight.

He stretched out his arms and raised his voice

with the anguish of a heart melted into his tones.

His face was lifted toward the moon journeying through night,

like a devotee absorbed in prayer.

The light hovered over him and slowed his steps,

and let his genial radiance flow across his features.

He cried to him: “Old man, what are you saying?

Speak! The night is in its final hours.”

He said: “O awakener of love and longing,

may you be safe; may worlds and realms salute you!

You have healed the heartache of an old man who loved you in his youth

and lived in this love, joyful and believing.

I spent my life climbing the loftiest peaks

until today I reached my dwelling right here.

I light my fire so you may see me, then turn

to release my songs and call to you late at night.

    فهأنذا ألقاك يا ضوءُ محسنَا

    They said: ‘He is stingy, withholding his companionship’;

yet here I find you, O light, generous.

Dogs that bark at the full moon on his journey are no different

from night-sleepers who deny the wonder of radiance!”

The light stared at him, then recoiled in anger,

and said: “You have wasted your youth in folly,

and still have not rested an eyelid wearied by sleeplessness.

To seek nearness through fire is mockery of it,

as though my rays had faded within your eyelids.

Your dwelling on these hills is idle folly,

when you have reached no vantage point of light.

You have been nothing but a deluded watcher,

the third of lovers who have left me no room to move,

and were a byword among the heart-free.

Alas, I never in all time was guilty,

to be repaid with the confidences of whoever loved or pined

and brought discredited proof of loving me.

Ask the rebel fallen from Paradise: did the night

reject him when he preferred and chose the earth?

Had he seen before me, in the darkness, a star

that lit his distant, branching path?

Was it in another's radiance that he gazed his fill and sang

of Eve, and stirred the pierced reed?

    I enfolded them both as one banished, tormented soul;

my shame before them melted and streamed away,

leaving me this pallor as its legacy.

I saw a mouth approach, a face grow flushed,

a fluttering breast leap upon another breast—

instincts in which error and imperfection were implanted,

seeking in my light their cherished sin.

Old man, cast off this gilded sash:

you will see putrid black mud dissolved in the cup.

The wine floated in it, and the earth settled.

The dogs of earth are nobler in their purpose:

my light illuminates their darkness, so they may ward off

the thief's steps as he traverses the hidden road.

If they bark at my light, I listen in delight

to the mellowest tune ringing sweetly through the night,

the greeting of one who praises me and cries welcome.

Children of Adam, had Adam not been your father,

I would have hoped for you an escape from the world of filth,

and favored you with the dog as a well-bred forefather.

How much better for man to become a dog!”

The beam turned from the earth and set in the west,

    .......................................

and whispered in darkness's breast, and darkness massed.

    .......................................
