    Alone! Alas for me! Without rest,

    Amid waves whose forces rage,

    Driving the ship with me like a swing,

    Bewildered in the ocean of this life.

    I search for him; all I see is in vain.

    Where is my beloved? Where have his footsteps gone?

    No star has guided me to him, nor

    Has fortune smiled on me that I might find his radiance.

    And there is no kindly wave for me

    To bear me in his wake so I may see him.

    No nearer to the shore of repose has it brought me—

    That horizon whose farthest end cannot be seen!

    There, on the shore—oh, what joy!

    Is the dearest of people, whose love for me is pure,

    تُشِيرُ بالآمالِ لي راحتاهْ

    Waiting for me, gazing intently, smiling;

    His palms beckon me with hopes.

    But it is far beyond reach! How can I journey by night,

    And where is escape from the winds' fury?

    Has it become inevitable that my little boat be seen

    Shattered, its two sides listing with me?

    And is the sea's expanse or its depth,

    However far it stretches, its two deeps flung wide,

    Vast enough to bury within it

    All my sorrows? Is its reach enough?

    كَحْلُمٍ من الماءِ والخضرةِ

    A flower grew in the midst of autumn,

    Like a dream of water and greenery;

    Like a lily in the splendor of a garment

    With springtime embroidery, tinged with red.

    She spreads through the meadows a translucent light

    And makes purity clear to the gaze.

    I seem to see in her a brimming goblet

    In which poison has been blended with wine.

    She has love's glow in a kiss

    Upon a lip half-parted in a smile.

    وآخرُ ما فيه من نَضْرَةِ

    Indeed, she is what remains of love,

    And the last of its freshness;

    Indeed, she is its amber wine,

    And its very last drop.

    She kills and gives life—what a wonder, life

    And death, two intimate companions in a flower!

    If I resist the surging billows,

    Struggling while the horizon is dark with clouds,

    And my hand does not leave my boat's

    Reins free, and I brave the hardships,

    Then the hidden workings of fate will cast it

    Shattered upon the hard rocks.

    Even the strongest arm is powerless

    To hold the oar without trembling.

    يحفرُ في اليمِّ حَفِيرَ التَّبَابْ

    If he defies the waves, he himself

    Digs the pit of ruin in the sea;

    And he himself hastens to his doom

    Into a gaping abyss amid the billows.

    وليتركِ الموجَ طليقَ الرِّغَابْ

    Let him therefore cast the oar from his hand,

    And let the waves follow their desires unchecked;

    إلى القضاءِ الحتْمِ دون ارتيابْ

    And let them carry the boat wherever they wish,

    Toward inevitable fate, without doubt;

    And let the waves swallow it into their belly,

    For today there is no escape from what has befallen.

    Long has my struggle lasted—alas for my soul! For

    My long struggle is only prolonged torment!

    دجيِّ الظلام بَكِيِّ السُّحُبْ

    Autumn appeared in the wake of a night

    Deep in darkness, with weeping clouds;

    And the last thing on the hills was a flower

    Spared by summer's blazing fire.

    من النَّوْر والوَرَقَاتِ القُشُبْ

    She stood alone on ground bereft

    Of blossoms and fresh young leaves;

    Like a guardian of the dead, never leaving

    The place where she stood trembling.

    Dropping tears all around her

    Were branches watching her from close by.

    Rain ran from the leaves upon them

    To other, pallid leaves, in torrents.

    Down over her trickled, stifled,

    Its spilling drops, without a sound.

    Oh, who is there for her, the dahlia?

    Who is the bewildered visitor drawing near?

    A wing of the last remaining butterfly,

    And of the mercy or tenderness that remains.

    Summer has passed, and after it have ceased

    The songs that once stirred delight.

    Her birds withdrew in sorrow; and vanished

    A love that came ... and a love that went.

    Do not leave our exhausted boat

    To be driven by despair and carried on by torment.

    Do not surrender its oar to death,

    For the promised shore is almost within reach.

    It is all the same whether the waves froth or foam:

    We shall not bow our heads before hardship.

    نقتحم النَّوْءَ ونطوِ العُبابْ!

    Here is my hand! Stretch a hand toward it;

    Let us brave the storm and cross the billows!

    Your wandering spirit called to my soul:

    I answer your call, O my calling helmswoman!

    The laws of humankind in this world

    Are too weak to conquer passion.

    I wished I could shatter these bonds

    And come to meet you upon the storm,

    Those changeful, darkened nights.

    My beloved, from what sorrowful heart,

    And what spirit, a genius of pain,

    Did you make a melody of the tenderest notes gush forth?

    حارسةَ الميْتِ بوادي العَدَمْ

    In it you described the dahlia,

    Guardian of the dead in the valley of nothingness;

    And imagined her like a ringing goblet,

    Glittering, with death smiling within?!

    على غرامٍ خِلْتِهِ قد مَضَى

    You wept with hot, flowing tears

    For a love you thought had passed;

    وَرْسًا، وتُدْمِي الزنبقَ الأبْيَضَا

    With yellow dye, and make the white lily bleed;

    In which the heart is terrified to beat!
