[Greeted] you on land and adorned you in the sky—

A sea that sang through rock and clapped through water.

At midmorning it bestows its kisses on your inlets,

And at evening flutters among them as breaths of air.

With ever-renewing passions, it lodged its love

In the varied rays and dewdrops upon you.

    A woman diviner seeking tidings.

And a painter, deft in imagination, fashioning from

The art of beauty enchantment and allure.

Into pictures, appearing amid its two faces' fragrance.

It brightens the sky with its brush; indeed,

The sky has grown clearer through its brush.

Morning is no clearer than its risings there

In sunshine, nor more splendid in radiance and light.

No, nor does night, its horizon star-studded,

Have a brighter full moon or a more delicate sky.

O, many a shore radiant at sunset it has transformed

Into a dusky horizon and a crimson deep!

And as though it had folded away the sky and unfurled

Flame, and made the rocks gush blood.

Where I have beheld the moonlit night.

The waves danced there beneath its rays,

And drifted, tugging at the breeze's cloak.

They turned their hearing toward you, listening intently.

Listening to the boatman beneath his sail,

Who sings, excelling in the music of his song.

Summer nights stirred his voice's enchantment,

So it saddened the shores and set the water astir.

And roused the birds' wings, so they circled

On the horizon, bewildered, following the echoes.

    Enchanting images, O shores, fashioned

For you in beauty by that master-craftsman sea.

So await it at your inlets, like

A wanderer returning faithfully to his refuge.

How long its waves have beaten against your rocks,

Out of the love and loyalty it harbored within!

Pardon, if it falters in the realm of language,

For it is the inarticulate one who silences the eloquent.

How many a lifeless thing has spoken to the living!

And ask it how it passed the nights awake,

And tested loved ones and enemies upon you.

While terror filled the reaches all around you!

They trod the clouds and descended into the dark sea.

Into the Nile a mighty host and a banner of theirs.

And had it been able, it would have warded their scourge off you,

And sent every ship flying in pieces.

Or had it possessed the power, it would have mustered the darkness,

And unsheathed the meteors and enlisted the storms.

Whatever mirth of life you and it desire.

And tomorrow a gleam will shine upon your brow,

Whose radiant features immortality has imprinted.

And from it a kiss flutters onto your lips,

The breeze listened to it and lowered its gaze in modesty.

So welcome beautiful summer, and prepare

For poetry within you a luxuriant grove.

And listen to imagination's melody, and set apart

For me, above your waters, a white rock.

And display the houris of Paradise, and release

The language of heaven, and inspire the poets.
