He descended to earth like a radiant ray,

    With a sorcerer's staff and a prophet's heart.

A gleam from the spirit's rays had come to dwell

Within the skin of a human frame.

She inspired his heart and tongue, from the realm of wisdom

    And light, with every secret meaning;

And granted him eloquence, a draught of enchantment,

Through which minds receive the sweetest refreshment.

When she approached the earth's horizon with him,

The universe rejoiced in the newborn boy.

The light of a face captivated all beings,

Smiling with cheer from a contented heart.

Forms of beauty hovered around a cradle

Surrounded by roses and fragrant myrtle.

And upon his mouth a smile shone,

Fluttering with light in dewy crimson.

And on his palms a basil sprig gathered dew,

And a lyre with a plaintive tune.

So they leaned above his cradle, gazing upon

The dawn of that genius's birth.

And, bewildered, they wondered: Has an angel come

    To us in human form?

Who could that newborn be, whom

The universe joyfully welcomed, inanimate and living alike?

Who could he be? A resounding voice rang out

From beyond life, plaintive in its resonance:

    ...............................

What you are witnessing is the birth of a poet.

    ...............................

The face of the earth was like the face of water,

Clear in beauty, overflowing with light,

When darkness departed and a dawn arrived,

Clear in light, radiant in brilliance.

Radiant in heaven and earth, offering

    Wondrous imagination and inspiration.

A sight dazzling to the eyes, and an enchantment

That shook the heart of virgin nature,

And revealed, among art's marvels, a garden

Adorned by the fingertips of allurement.

Not even spring, the master craftsman, had abler fingers

Than it, in precision and beauty of execution.

It arranged the earth as an adornment, revealing it

As features of its radiant face:

A hillock beside a stream, beside a garden,

Beside a thicket, and a rock beside water.

    وازْدَهَى بالوُجودِ أيَّ ازدهاءِ

    What appeared and shone forth delighted the dawn;

    It exulted in existence—what exultation!

It said: Nature has never shown me,

    When I arrived, such splendor.

No, never have my eyes and ears been filled

With such radiance and such singing.

For what glad tidings has the earth adorned herself,

    And strutted in enchanting sights?

Perhaps she was told something from the unseen,

Brought to her by the stars of evening.

It said: What do I see? A voice echoed,

Like revelation's echo in the heart of heaven:

    .................................

This, O Dawn, is the birth of a poet.

    .................................

There was a dawn, and there was a morning

In which beauty had its morning and evening outings.

In it, maidens went early to the gardens,

Carried away by youthful longing and merriment.

And their palms rose in prayer.

They said: How beautiful the morning! Never has

Such a morning come upon the earth.

For merriment and singing are possible here.

    يرقصُ الظِّلُّ والسَّنَا الوضَّاحُ

    Shadow and brilliant light dance;

And on its banks there stood, singing to us,

A bird, calling in a clear, ringing voice.

And a butterfly has colors from the flowers

And a wing from the freshest rays of light.

It fluttered in ecstasy, called by blossoms

And fragrance wafting from the earth.

And here is a hillock where gleam

    The green of grass and sparkling dew;

And a breeze, as though it were a wandering breath,

To whose whisper the great trees listen.

The East has never given birth to such a morning,

Nor have the bright suns borne its like.

It is as though the universe holds banners of a birth

And a wedding for which festivities have arisen.

What beauty do we see? A voice echoed,

Like a whisper confided by spirits:

    ...................................

This morning is the birth of a poet.

    ...................................

And translucent veils of bright, crimson gauze,

And a sky in which rise and sink

Clouds like foam above the waves of a sea:

Only a wistfulness flowing from a spring of enchantment.

The earth's horizon still held along its edges

    A wandering echo of birdsong.

And in its curves fluttered a last breath of life,

From the sun's radiance, quivering and never still.

And as though existence were a sea of light,

    Along whose horizon angels glide.

A star cried: I see the universe revealing

Signs of joy upon its face.

And I see that evening stirring enchantment

And wistfulness, filling my eyes and breast.

Are we in a night of inspiration and revelation,

Or a night of love and poetry?

Why does this evening fill us with love,

Kindle enchantment within us, and entice us?

What secret could it be? A cry rang out

In a hidden whisper of echo:

    .................................

This evening is the birth of a poet.

    .................................

In an engulfing ocean of rays,

And a stillness spreading awe through the universe,

Before which the revolving nights stood still.

Glad tidings shook the earth the day you came.

Wretched in feeling, sorrowful and bewildered!

    مٌ وحَفَّتْ به الجدودُ العواثرْ

    A beauty that kindles the youth of thoughts;

Delightful to drink from, sweet at its sources.

    In that exquisite, enchanting spot.

    ................................

And make my garden a poet's poem.

    ................................

Enter now, O doers of good,

    A garden you were promised.

Make it a shrine of marvels,

And fill it with varied forms of beauty.

Fill it with art, not temptation,

And spread serenity and stillness over it,

Save for a tender melody fluttering there,

Which the birds sing while roosting,

And a shining radiance that illumines the dark,

With everlasting rays that efface death,

Clear in light, never dazzling the eyes.

And sing of it as you desire,

And describe it as streams and springs,

    Dewy roses and branches.

Do not stir passion and wantonness there,

    And beware of recalling Majnun:

For he has returned from love laden with sorrows,

His heart empty and his tear-ducts dry.

Yet in his two gardens he is the happiest poet.

O poet, take up your lyre,

And play now, reciting your poems,

    And make love and beauty your emblem;

And invoke a Lord who summoned existence and blessed it,

So it rejoiced and exulted at the birth of a poet.
