This is the hoped-for homecoming—a journey grown short,

And an exile from your pure soil that did not last long.

Oh, the people's longing! Did they clamor at the sight of him,

And renew the pledge from his earliest days?

The river surged from its remotest springs,

Eager, outstripping the flash of swift lightning.

Its fierce current rages and asks it:

Which legend from my past has been conjured before me?

And what bustling place on my two banks was traversed

    By millions, hurrying and celebrating?

Is it the exiled rebel's return from a journey

    Whose crossroads imagination cannot reach?

    ضَنُّوا عليه بقبرِ الهانئِ الجذِلِ!

    No, it is the martyr laid out in his shrouds;

They begrudged him a grave of contentment and joy!

How today resembles yesterday, when they hurried forth

Amid the shocks of that momentous calamity.

These remains are glory's legacy in a homeland

Whose banner never turned aside from glory's buried treasure.

The most precious treasure in the legacy of its revival:

The remains of one martyred fighting for truth.

History has walked to you bearing him; receive

The knotted laurel from his temples, and welcome him.

The meeting has come: what words have you prepared,

And what longings and kisses have you stored away?

    هذا بشيرُ الهدى والحبِّ والأملِ

    So look toward victory and draw its dawns near;

This is the herald of guidance, love, and hope.

Were they the Nile's monarchs, or their ghosts, who crossed

From the riverbank, filling plain and mountain?

They passed lightly over the valley, as though they were

Processions of white clouds in the twilight.

And in their features, remembrance; and in their eyes,

Secrets of a past draped across the ages.

They seek forgiveness for a day gone by, though they had

No hand in it: Pharaoh was above treachery.

Not one to rob the dead of their resting places

Was the lord of scepters, crowns, and realms.

They saluted Saad with their spirits; had they possessed

A pulse in the aorta, they would have walked in the thronged gathering.

O bearer of immortality, how many miracles the spirit holds,

And how often immortality's spirit has taken form in a man!

Inspiration and lawful enchantment have not ceased, nor

Has life been emptied of pioneers and messengers,

Nor of the blood of martyrs who, through it, bring forth

A generation of truth, or a world of hope.

And still you have a voice: whenever they level

Tyranny's keen spearheads, it bends them back in shame.

And it circles the booming cannon, silencing it,

While the fire in its chest rattles with dread.

    Your mighty banner's processions still

Follow one another, its flags red as flames.

It marches on a mighty foot that has mocked

Rock and wave, fire and spear.

To your footsteps yesterday; follow it slowly.

    ما للزمانِ بما خَلَّدْتَ من قِبَلِ!!

    Look at it: its landmarks have not changed;

Time has no power against what you have made immortal!

Today has made it bleed—a wound that, though ages passed,

Would remain unhealed in Egypt's side.

Then let the finest of the speeches you created be delivered

By your eternal majesty, a peerless example.

And live, as you are, a meaning in our consciences,

Whose inspiration shall never come to an end,

And an inspiring image of gracious radiance,

More tender than the fleeting thoughts of an amorous poet.

Your memory through time is lifetimes made immortal,

The life of an unbroken gathering of glories.

From it, wherever they turn, people are greeted

By the ray of your star, blazing in eternity.
