مالِيwhat is the matter with me? وَقَفتُI stood عَلىby القُبورِthe graves مُسَلِّماًoffering greetings
مالِي وَقَفتُ عَلى القُبورِ مُسَلِّماً
قَبرَthe grave of الحَبيبِthe beloved فَلَمbut did not يَرُدَّhe replies جَوابيmy reply
قَبرَ الحَبيبِ فَلَم يَرُدَّ جَوابي
Why is it that I stood by the graves, greeting
Why have I paused by the graves to bid farewell,
What ails me that I stand by the graves, offering greetings,
my beloved's grave, yet he did not answer me?
My beloved's grave, but no reply comes my call,
To the grave of the beloved, yet he returned no answer?
أَحَبيبُO beloved مالَكَwhat ails you? لاnot تَرُدُّyou reply جَوابَناour reply
أَحَبيبُ مالَكَ لا تَرُدُّ جَوابَنا
اَنَسيتَhave you forgotten? بَعديin my absence خِلَّةَfriendship الأَحبابِthe loved ones
اَنَسيتَ بَعدي خِلَّةَ الأَحبابِ
O beloved, what ails you that you do not answer us?
My beloved, why no reply comes from you,
O beloved, what prevents you from returning our call?
Have you forgotten, since we parted, the bond of loved ones?
Have you forgotten after me the intimates dear?
Have you forgotten, in my absence, the bond of loved ones?
قالَsaid الحَبيبُthe beloved وَكَيفَand how لِيfor me بِجَوابِكُمwith a reply to you
قالَ الحَبيبُ وَكَيفَ لِي بِجَوابِكُم
وَأَناwhile I am رَهينُa captive of جَنادِلٍstones وَتُرابِand dust
وَأَنا رَهينُ جَنادِلٍ وَتُرابِ
The beloved said, “How can I answer you,
The beloved replied: How can I answer your call
The beloved replied: "And how can I offer you an answer,
while I am a captive of stones and dust?
When shrouded in dust and earth lies all?
When I am held hostage by heavy stones and soil?"
أَكَلَconsumed التُرابُthe dust مَحاسِنيmy beautiful features فَنَسيتُكُمso I forgot you
أَكَلَ التُرابُ مَحاسِني فَنَسيتُكُم
وَحُجِبتُand I was shut away عَنfrom أَهليmy family وَعَنand from أَترابيmy peers
وَحُجِبتُ عَن أَهلي وَعَن أَترابي
The dust has consumed my beauty, so I have forgotten you,
The earth has eaten my charms so I forget you,
"The earth has consumed my beauty, causing me to forget you,
and I have been shut away from my family and my peers.
Veiled from my folk and companions true,
And I have been veiled away from my family and my peers."
فَعَلَيكُمُso upon you مِنّيfrom me السَلامَpeace تَقَطَّعَتhas been severed
فَعَلَيكُمُ مِنّي السَلامَ تَقَطَّعَت
مِنّيfrom me وَمِنكُمand from you خِلَّةَfriendship الأَحبابِthe loved ones
مِنّي وَمِنكُم خِلَّةَ الأَحبابِ
So peace be upon you from me; severed is
My greetings to you though severed ties
"So peace be upon you from me; for severed now,
the bond of loved ones between me and you.”
Of love between you and I in demise.
Between me and you, is the fellowship of friends."
