إِلىto اللَهِGod أَشكوI complain لاnot إِلىto الناسِpeople أَشتَكيI complain
إِلى اللَهِ أَشكو لا إِلى الناسِ أَشتَكي
أَرىI see الأَرضَthe earth تَبقىendures وَالأَخِلّاءand dear friends تَذهَبُdepart
أَرى الأَرضَ تَبقى وَالأَخِلّاء تَذهَبُ
To God I complain; I do not complain to people.
I complain to Allah, not to people
To God I complain, and not to men do I complain;
I see the earth endure while dear friends depart.
I see the land remains while friends go away
For I see the earth endure, while beloved friends depart.
أَخِلّايَmy dear friends لَوif غَيرَother than الحِمامِdeath أَصابَكُمbefell you
أَخِلّايَ لَو غَيرَ الحِمامِ أَصابَكُم
عَتِبتُI would have reproached وَلَكِنand yet ماthere is no عَلىagainst المَوتِdeath مُعتَبُreproach
عَتِبتُ وَلَكِن ما عَلى المَوتِ مُعتَبُ
My dear friends, had anything other than death befallen you,
If other than death had taken you, my friends
O my friends, had it been other than death that struck you,
I would have reproached it, but no reproach can be laid upon death.
I would complain, but one does not blame death
I would have reproached, but against death there is no reproach.
