أَلاtake heed فَاصبِرso be patient عَلىwith الحَدَثِthe calamity الجَليلِgrave
وَداوِand heal جَواكَyour anguish بِالصَبرِwith patience الجَميلِgracious
Take heed, then patiently endure the grave calamity.
Oh endure with patience the great misfortune,
Oh, bear with patience the grave and heavy event,
And heal your anguish with gracious patience.
And cure your wounds with beautiful patience.
And heal your inner grief with beautiful patience.
وَلاand do not تَجزَعbe distraught وَإِنand even if أُعسِرتَyou are impoverished يَوماًone day
فَقَدfor indeed أَيسَرَتyou have prospered فيin الزَمَنِthe time الطَّويلِlong
And do not be distraught, even if one day you fall into poverty.
Do not despair even if you become destitute one day,
Do not lose heart, even if hardship befalls you one day,
For you have enjoyed prosperity for a long time.
For days of comfort will come in due course.
For you have lived in ease for a long span of time.
وَلاand do not تَيأَسdespair فَإِنَّfor indeed اليَأسَdespair كُفرٌunbelief
لَعَلَّperhaps اللَهَGod يَغنيmakes rich مِنfrom قَليلِlittle
And do not despair, for despair is unbelief.
Do not lose hope for losing hope is blasphemy,
And do not despair, for despair is disbelief;
Perhaps God will make you rich from little.
Perhaps Allah will enrich you from something small.
Perhaps God will grant riches arising from little.
وَلاand do not تَظُنَّنْever think بِرَبِّكَof your Lord غَيرَother than خَيرٍgood
فَإِنَّfor indeed اللَهَGod أَولىmost worthy بِالجَميلِof graciousness
And never think anything but good of your Lord.
Do not think your Lord will do anything but good,
Think nothing of your Lord except what is good,
For graciousness most befits God.
For Allah knows best what is beautiful.
For God is most worthy of beautiful deeds.
وَإِنَّand indeed العُسرَhardship يَتبَعُهُfollows it يَسارٌease
وَقَولُand the word اللَهِof God أَصدَقُtruest كُلَّevery قيلِutterance
And indeed, hardship is followed by ease.
Hardship is always followed by ease,
Indeed, hardship is followed by ease,
And God's word is the truest of all utterances.
And the word of Allah is the truest of all words.
And the word of God is the truest of all sayings.
فَلَوfor if أَنَّthat العُقولَintellects تَجُرُّdraw in رِزقاًsustenance
لَكانَwould then be الرِزقُsustenance عِندَwith ذَويthose endowed with العُقولِintellects
For if intellects could draw in sustenance,
If sustenance came through intelligence,
If it were intellects that drew forth provision,
Then sustenance would belong to those endowed with intellect.
It would be found with the intelligent.
Then provision would belong to the possessors of minds.
وَكَمand how many مِنof مُؤمِنٍa believer قَدindeed جاعَwent hungry يَوماًone day

And many a believer who went hungry one day
And how many faithful starved one day,
How many a believer has gone hungry for a day,
Will have his thirst quenched with the pure wine of Salsabil.
Only to be satisfied with pure honeyed drink.
Who will be quenched with the pure nectar of Salsabil.
