الحَمدُpraise لِلّهِto God لاno شَريكَpartner لَهُfor Him
دَأبِيَmy constant practice فيin صُبحِهِHis morning وَفيand in غِلسِهHis predawn darkness
Praise be to God, who has no partner—
Praise be to Allah, who has no partner
Praise be to God, He has no partner,
my constant practice in His morning and His predawn darkness.
My habit morning and evening
My constant habit through His dawn and His dark,
لَمdid not يَبقَremain لِيَfor me مُؤنِسٌa comforting companion فَيُؤنِسَنيand thus comfort me
إِلّاexcept أَنيسٌa companion أَخافُI fear مِنof أُنسِهhis company
I have no companion left to comfort me,
None remains to comfort me, to give me comfort
No companion remains to grant me solace,
except a companion whose company I fear.
Except the one whose company I fear
Save a companion whose company I dread.
فَاِعتَزِلِso withdraw from الناسَpeople ماas much as اِستَطَعتُI was able وَلاand do not
تَرَكنyou rely إِلىon مَنone who تَخافُyou fear مِنof دَنَسِهhis taint
So withdraw from people as much as I was able, and do not
So avoid people as much as you are able
So withdraw from people as much as you are able,
rely on one whose taint you fear.
And do not rely on those whose impurity you fear
And do not lean toward those whose corruption you fear;
فَالعَبدُfor the servant يَرجوhopes for ماwhat لَيسَdoes not يَدرِكَهُhe attains it
وَالمَوتُand death أَدنىnearer إِلَيهِto him مِنthan نَفسِهhis own self
For the servant hopes for what he does not attain,
For the servant hopes for what he cannot attain
For the servant hopes for what he shall never grasp,
and death is nearer to him than his own self.
And death is closer to him than his own self
While death is closer to him than his own breath.
