أَلاlo باعَدَmay he drive far away اللَهُGod أَهلَthe people of النِفاقِhypocrisy
وَأَهلَand the people of الأَراجيفِfalse rumors وَالباطِلِand falsehood
Lo, may God drive the people of hypocrisy far away,
May Allah cast far away the people of hypocrisy,
and the people of false rumors and falsehood.
And the mongers of sedition and falsehood.
يَقولونَthey say ليto me قَدindeed قَلاكَhe has come to hate you الرَسولُthe Messenger
فَخلّاكَso he left you فيamong الحالِفِthe oath-swearer الخاذِلِthe deserter
They tell me, “The Messenger has indeed come to hate you,
They say to me: "The Messenger has come to loathe you,
so he left you among oath-swearing deserters.
"And has left you behind among the deserters."
وَماand not ذاكَthat إِلّاexcept لِأَنَّbecause النَبيَّthe Prophet
جَفاكَhe has shunned you وَماand not كانَhe was بِالفاعِلِone to do so
And that is only because the Prophet
"And this is only because the Prophet
has shunned you”—though he would not do that.
"Has shunned you"—though he is not one to act so.
فَسِرتُso I set out وَسَيفيand my sword عَلىupon عاتِقيmy shoulder
إِلىto الراحِمِthe merciful one الحاكِمِthe judge الفاصِلِthe decisive arbiter
So I set out, my sword upon my shoulder,
So I set out, my sword slung upon my shoulder,
to the merciful judge, the decisive arbiter.
Toward the merciful one, the ruler, the arbiter.
فَلَماthen when رَآنيhe saw me هَفاfluttered قَلبُهُhis heart
وَقالَand he said مَقالَthe words of الأَخِthe brother السائِلِthe inquiring one
Then, when he saw me, his heart fluttered,
When he saw me, his heart stirred with yearning,
and he spoke as an inquiring brother:
And he spoke with the words of an inquiring brother:
أَممنfrom whom? أَبِنexplain لِيَto me فَأَنبأتُهُso I informed him
بارجافِof the rumor-mongering ذيone possessing الحَسَدِenvy الداغِلِmalicious
“From whom? Explain to me.” So I told him
"What is this? Explain to me." So I informed him
of the rumor-mongering of one harboring malicious envy.
Of the rumors spread by the envious and treacherous.
فَقالَthen he said أَخيmy brother أَنتَyou مِنfrom دونِهِمapart from them
كَهَرونَlike Aaron موسىMoses وَلَمand did not يَأتَلِhold back
Then he said, “My brother, you, apart from them,
Then he said: "O my brother, you are to me—unlike them—
are as Aaron was to Moses”—and he did not hold back.
"As Aaron was to Moses," and he did not waver.
