لَئِن ساءَني دَهرٌ عَزَمتُ تَصَبُّراً

لَئِن ساءَني دَهرٌ عَزَمتُ تَصَبُّراً

فَكُلُ بَلاءٍ لا يَدومُ يَسيرُ

فَكُلُ بَلاءٍ لا يَدومُ يَسيرُ

If time grieves me, I resolve to endure patiently;

If time has wronged me, I am determined to be patient,

If time should grieve me, I resolve to endure with patience,

for every affliction that does not last is easy to bear.

For every affliction will not last, it is trifling.

For every affliction that does not last is light to bear.

وَإِن سَرَّني لَم اَبتَهج بِسُروره

وَإِن سَرَّني لَم اَبتَهج بِسُروره

فَكُلُّ سُرورٍ لا يَدومُ حَقيرُ

فَكُلُّ سُرورٍ لا يَدومُ حَقيرُ

And if it gladdens me, I do not exult in its joy;

And if it has gladdened me, I did not rejoice in its joy,

And if it gladdens me, I do not exult in its pleasure,

for every joy that does not last is insignificant.

For every joy will not last, it is insignificant.

For every joy that does not last is worthless.
