I see that the world's afflictions upon me are many,

And its companion remains ailing until death.

I remembered Abu Arwa and spent the night as though I

were charged with bringing back bygone sorrows.

The young man wishes that his friend should not endure,

Yet he has no path but death.

There is no escaping death, nor any escaping decay,

And indeed, my life after you will be brief.

Every meeting of two friends has its parting,

And everything short of death is a small matter.

And indeed, my losing one after another

is proof that no friend endures.

When one day my span is cut off from life,

Then the weeping women's lament will count for little.

My memory will be shunned, and my affection forgotten,

And after me, my friend will find another friend.
