إِذا ما المَرءُ لَم يَحفَظ ثَلاثاً

فَبِعهُ وَلَو لِكَفٍّ مِن رَمادِ

If a man does not keep three things

If a man does not safeguard three things,

Sell him for a handful of ashes.

Then sell him, even for a handful of ash:

وَفاءً لِلصَديقِ وَبَذلِ مالٍ

وَكِتمانُ السَرائِرِ في الفُؤادِ

Loyalty to friends, spending money

Loyalty to a friend, the giving of wealth,

And keeping secrets in his heart

And keeping secrets buried within the heart.
