أَيَحسَبُdo they suppose? أَولادَsons of الجَهالَةِignorance أَنَناthat we
عَلىon الخيلِthe horses لَسناwe are not مِثلَهُمlike them فيamong الفَوارِسِthe horsemen
Do the sons of ignorance suppose that we
Do the ignorant youth think that we
Do the children of ignorance reckon that we,
on horseback are not their equals among the horsemen?
Are not like them when on horses mounted?
Upon our steeds, are not their match among knights?
فَسائِلso ask بَنيthe sons of بَدرٍBadr إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle لَقيتَهُمyou meet them
بِقَتليabout my slaying ذَويmen with الأَقرانِpeers or rivals يَومِthe day of التَمارُسِclose combat
So ask the sons of Badr, when you meet them,
Ask the sons of Badr when you meet them
So ask the clan of Badr, whenever you meet them,
about my slaying rival champions on the day of close combat.
About my killing of equal warriors on the day of skirmishing
Of my slaying the champions on the day of fierce struggle,
وَهَذاand this رَسولُthe Messenger of اللَهِGod كَالبَدرِlike the full moon بَينَناamong us
بِهِthrough him كَشَفَdrove away اللَهُGod العِدىthe foes بِالتَناكُسِin headlong retreat
And this is God's Messenger, like the full moon among us;
And this is Allah's Messenger among us
And this is the Messenger of Allah, like the full moon among us,
through him God drove off the foes in headlong retreat.
Like the full moon, by whom Allah defeated the enemies in retreat
Through whom Allah swept away the enemies in headlong defeat,
وَإِنّاand indeed we أُناسٌa people لاnot نَرىwe regard الحَربَwar سِبَّةًa disgrace
وَلاand not نَنثَنيwe turn back عِندَbefore الرِماحِthe spears المُداعِسِthrusting
And indeed we are a people who do not regard war as a disgrace,
And we are a people who do not consider war a fault
Indeed, we are a folk who do not consider war a shame,
nor do we turn back before the thrusting spears.
Nor do we waver when gripped by piercing spears
Nor do we turn away before the thrusting of spears,
فَماso no قيلَwas said فيناabout us بَعدَهاafter it مِنany (emphatic) مَقالَةٍutterance
فَماso not غادَرَتit left منّاof us جَديداًa new garment لِلاَبَسِfor a wearer
So no utterance was made about us after it;
So whatever is said about us after it
Thus no word of reproach was spoken against us in its wake,
and so it left us no new garment for a wearer.
It did not spare any of us to be armored
Nor did the battle leave a fresh garment for any to wear.
