I saw the polytheists act unjustly against us,

And they persisted stubbornly in waywardness and error.

And they said, "We are more numerous," when we marched forth

On the morning of terror, with long spears.

So if they act insolently and boast over us

About Hamza, while he is in the lofty chambers,

He did slay Utbah on the day of Badr,

And he showed valor and fought, sparing no effort.

And you routed their cavalry at Badr,

And you pursued the routed host with men.

And you openly left their ram,

Talha, lost in error—praise be to God.

Then he fell face down, and you lifted from him

    A fine-edged blade, freshly burnished,

As though salt had mingled with it whenever

It blazed like lightning in the shadows.
