ياO لَهفَanguish نَفسيmy soul فاتَنيeluded me مُعاوِيَهMuawiyah
يا لَهفَ نَفسي فاتَني مُعاوِيَه
فَوقَatop طِمرٍa swift steed كَالعِقابِlike the eagle الضارِيَهthe ravening one
فَوقَ طِمرٍ كَالعِقابِ الضارِيَه
Alas for my soul! Muawiyah eluded me,
O my yearning soul, Mu'awiyah has escaped me
Alas for my soul! Muawiyah has eluded me,
Atop a swift steed like a ravening eagle.
Above the ashes like a predatory eagle
Astride a lean steed like a predatory eagle.
