يُهَدِّدُنيhe threatens me بِالعَظيمِwith something terrible الوَليدُal-Walid
فَقُلتُso I said أَناI اِبنُson of أَبيAbu (father of) طالِبِTalib
Al-Walid threatens me with something terrible.
The mighty Walid threatens me,
Al-Walid threatens me with a grave matter,
So I said: I am the son of Abu Talib.
So I said, I am the son of Abu Talib,
But I replied: "I am the son of Abu Talib!"
أَناI اِبنُson of المُبَجَّلِthe revered one بِالأَبطَحينِin the two Abtahs
وَبِالبَيتِand at the House مِنamong سَلَفيmy forebears غالِبِGhalib
I am the son of him revered in the two Abtahs,
I am the son of the revered one at Abaḥ and Bayt,
I am the son of the one revered in the two valleys,
And at the House—Ghalib, one of my forebears.
My ancestors before me were victorious.
And by the House, descending from my ancestor Ghalib.
فَلاso do not تَحسَبَنّيsuppose me أَخافُI fear الوَليدَal-Walid
وَلاnor أَنَّنيthat I مِنهُof him بِالهائِبِin dread
So do not suppose that I fear al-Walid,
So do not think I fear Walid,
So do not ever think that I fear Al-Walid,
Nor that I stand in dread of him.
Nor am I fleeing in panic from him.
Nor that I am one to cower before him.
فَياso, O اِبنَson of المُغيرَةِal-Mughira إِنّيindeed I اِمرُؤٌa man
سَموحُgenerous الأَنامِلِthe fingertips بِالقاضِبِwith the cutting sword
So, son of al-Mughira, I am a man
O son of Mughirah, I am a man
So, O son of Al-Mughirah, know that I am a man
Whose fingers are generous with the cutting sword,
Whose spears inflict pain on the enemy.
Whose fingers grant generously with the sharp blade.
طَويلُlong اللِسانِof tongue عَلىagainst الشائِنينَthose who revile
قَصيرُshort اللِسانِof tongue عَلىtoward الصاحِبِthe companion
Long of tongue against those who revile,
I have a sharp tongue against the wicked,
I have a long tongue against those who revile,
Short of tongue toward a companion.
And a gentle tongue towards a friend.
Yet a short tongue towards a companion.
خَسِرتُمyou have lost بِتَكذيبِكُمthrough your denial لِلرَسولِof the Messenger
تُعيبونَyou find fault with ماwhat لَيسَis not بِالعائِبِfaulty
You have lost by calling the Messenger a liar;
You have lost by denying the Messenger,
You have lost by your denial of the Messenger,
You find fault with what is not faulty.
Criticizing what is above reproach.
Finding fault with that which bears no flaw.
وَكَذَّبتُموهُand you called him a liar بِوَحيِconcerning the revelation of السَماءِheaven
أَلاbehold لَعنَةُcurse اللَهِGod لِلكاذِبِupon the liar
And you called him a liar concerning heaven's revelation.
And you belied him of the revelation from heaven—
You accused him of lying about the revelation of Heaven—
Behold, God's curse is upon the liar!
Cursed by Allah be those who lie!
Beware, for the curse of Allah is upon the liar.
