دَعِ الحِرصَ عَلى الدُنيا

دَعِ الحِرصَ عَلى الدُنيا

وَفي العَيشِ فَلا تَطمَع

وَفي العَيشِ فَلا تَطمَع

Abandon greed for this world.

Leave off greed for this world,

Leave aside greed for this world,

And in life, do not be greedy.

And in living do not be ambitious,

And do not be covetous in life,

وَلا تَجمع مِنَ المالِ

وَلا تَجمع مِنَ المالِ

فَلا تَدري لِمَن تَجمَع

فَلا تَدري لِمَن تَجمَع

And do not amass wealth,

And do not gather wealth,

Do not accumulate hoards of wealth,

for you do not know for whom you amass it.

For you know not for whom you gather.

For you know not for whom you gather it,

وَلا تَدري أَفي أَرضِ

وَلا تَدري أَفي أَرضِ

كَ أَم في غَيرِها تُصرَع

كَ أَم في غَيرِها تُصرَع

And you do not know whether in the land

And you know not in which land

And you know not whether in your own land,

that is yours, or in another, you will be struck down.

You or another will die.

Or in another you shall be struck down,

فَإِنَّ الرِزقَ مَقسومٌ

فَإِنَّ الرِزقَ مَقسومٌ

وَسوءُ الظَنِّ لا يَنفَع

وَسوءُ الظَنِّ لا يَنفَع

For sustenance is allotted,

For sustenance is apportioned,

For truly, provision is divinely apportioned,

and mistrust does no good.

And ill thoughts do not help.

And anxious doubt brings no benefit,

فَقيرٌ كُلُّ مَن يَطمَع

فَقيرٌ كُلُّ مَن يَطمَع

غَنيٌّ كُلُّ مَن يَقنَع

غَنيٌّ كُلُّ مَن يَقنَع

Poor is everyone who is greedy.

Poor is everyone who is ambitious,

A pauper is everyone who covets,

Rich is everyone who is content.

Wealthy is everyone who is content.

And rich is everyone who is content.
