أَلاAh! ياO رَسولَMessenger اللَهِGod كُنتَyou were رَجائياmy hope
أَلا يا رَسولَ اللَهِ كُنتَ رَجائيا
وَكُنتَand you were بِناtoward us بَرّاًkind وَلَمand not تَكُyou were جافياharsh
وَكُنتَ بِنا بَرّاً وَلَم تَكُ جافيا
Ah, O Messenger of God, you were my hope.
Oh, Messenger of God, you were truly my hope,
And you were kind to us, and were not harsh.
You were righteous toward us, never harsh or cruel.
كَأَنَّas though عَلىupon قَلبيmy heart لِذِكرِat the remembrance of مُحَمَّدٍMuhammad
كَأَنَّ عَلى قَلبي لِذِكرِ مُحَمَّدٍ
وَماand what جاءَcame مِنfrom بَعدِafter النَبِيِّthe Prophet المَكاوياthe branding irons
وَما جاءَ مِن بَعدِ النَبِيِّ المَكاويا
It is as though upon my heart, at the remembrance of Muhammad,
It is as if, upon my heart at the memory of Muhammad,
and what came after the Prophet, lie branding irons.
And the grief that followed the Prophet, were cauterizing irons.
أَفاطِمَO Fatimah صَلَّىmay He bless اللَهُGod رَبُّLord of مُحَمَّدٍMuhammad
أَفاطِمَ صَلَّى اللَهُ رَبُّ مُحَمَّدٍ
عَلىupon جَدَثٍa grave أَمسىcame to be بِيَثرِبَin Yathrib ثاوياlying at rest
عَلى جَدَثٍ أَمسى بِيَثرِبَ ثاويا
O Fatimah, may God, the Lord of Muhammad, send blessings
O Fatimah, may Allah, the Lord of Muhammad, send peace
upon a grave that now lies in Yathrib.
Upon a grave in Yathrib where he has come to dwell.
فَدىًa ransom لِرَسولِfor the Messenger اللَهِGod أُميmy mother وَخالَتيand my maternal aunt
فَدىً لِرَسولِ اللَهِ أُمي وَخالَتي
وَعَمّيand my paternal uncle وَزَوجيand my wife ثُمَّthen نَفسيmyself وَخالياand my maternal uncle
وَعَمّي وَزَوجي ثُمَّ نَفسي وَخاليا
May my mother and my maternal aunt be a ransom for the Messenger of God,
May my mother and my aunt be a ransom for the Messenger of God,
and my paternal uncle and my wife, then myself and my maternal uncle.
And my paternal uncle, my husband, then my own soul, and my maternal uncle.
فَلَوfor if أَنَّthat رَبَّthe Lord of العَرشِthe Throne أَبقاكَhad kept you بَينَناamong us
فَلَو أَنَّ رَبَّ العَرشِ أَبقاكَ بَينَنا
سَعِدناwe would have been happy وَلَكِنand yet أَمرُهُHis decree كانَwas ماضياfulfilled
سَعِدنا وَلَكِن أَمرُهُ كانَ ماضيا
For if the Lord of the Throne had kept you among us,
If only the Lord of the Throne had kept you among us,
we would have been happy, but His decree was fulfilled.
We would have been joyous, but His command was destined to pass.
عَلَيكَupon you مِنَfrom اللَهِGod السَلامَpeace تَحيَةًas a greeting
عَلَيكَ مِنَ اللَهِ السَلامَ تَحيَةً
وَأُدخِلتَand may you be admitted جَناتٍgardens مِنَof العَدنِEden (everlasting abode) راضياcontent
وَأُدخِلتَ جَناتٍ مِنَ العَدنِ راضيا
May peace from God be upon you as a greeting,
Upon you be the peace of God as a greeting,
and may you be admitted to the gardens of Eden, content.
And may you be admitted to Gardens of Eden, well-pleased.
