تَوَقُّوا النِساءَ فَإِنَّ النِساءَ

تَوَقُّوا النِساءَ فَإِنَّ النِساءَ

نَقَصنَ حُظوظاً وَعَقلاً وَدينا

نَقَصنَ حُظوظاً وَعَقلاً وَدينا

Beware of women, for women

Beware of women, for women

Beware of women, for truly women

Are deficient in shares, intellect, and religion.

Are deficient in luck and intellect and religion,

Are deficient in fortune, in intellect, and in faith.

وَكُلٌّ بِهِ جاءَ نَصُّ الكِتابِ

وَكُلٌّ بِهِ جاءَ نَصُّ الكِتابِ

وَأَوضَحَ فيهِ دَليلاً مُبينا

وَأَوضَحَ فيهِ دَليلاً مُبينا

And the text of the Book has set forth each of these,

And the evidence for each has come

All of this has been stated in the text of the Book,

And has laid out clear proof therein.

In the Scripture's clear proof.

Which has clarified therein a manifest proof.

فَأَما الدَليلُ لِنَقصِ الحُظوظ

فَأَما الدَليلُ لِنَقصِ الحُظوظ

فَإِرثُهُن نُصفُ إِرثِ البَنينا

فَإِرثُهُن نُصفُ إِرثِ البَنينا

As for the proof of their diminished shares,

As for the evidence of their deficient luck,

As for the evidence regarding the deficiency of fortune:

Their inheritance is half the sons’ inheritance.

Their inheritance is half the males' share;

Their inheritance is half the inheritance of sons.

وَنِصفُ العُقولَ فَإِجزاؤُهُنَّ

وَنِصفُ العُقولَ فَإِجزاؤُهُنَّ

بِنِصفِ الشَهادَةِ في الشاهِدينا

بِنِصفِ الشَهادَةِ في الشاهِدينا

And as for half the intellect, they are deemed sufficient

And half the intellect, so their witness

And regarding the halving of intellects, their measure

For half the testimony among witnesses.

Is equal to half of two witnesses.

Is accounted as half a testimony among witnesses.

وَحَسبُكَ مِن نَقصِ أَديانِهِنَّ

وَحَسبُكَ مِن نَقصِ أَديانِهِنَّ

فالسَتَ تَزدادَ فيهِ يَقينا

فالسَتَ تَزدادَ فيهِ يَقينا

And sufficient proof for you of their deficient religion

And the deficiency in their religion is enough:

And suffice it for you regarding the deficiency of their faith—

(So do you not grow more certain of it?)

Menstruation increases their certainty.

Though you need no increase in certainty regarding it—

فَواتُ الصَلاةِ وَتَركِ الصيامِ

فَواتُ الصَلاةِ وَتَركِ الصيامِ

في مُدَّةِ الحَيضِ حيناً فَحينا

في مُدَّةِ الحَيضِ حيناً فَحينا

Is missing prayer and abandoning fasting

Missing prayers and fasting

Is the missing of prayers and the abandoning of fasting

During menstruation, time after time.

At times of menstruation again and again

During the time of menstruation, again and again.

فَلا تَطيعوهُنَّ يَوماً فَقَد

فَلا تَطيعوهُنَّ يَوماً فَقَد

تَكونُ النَدامَةُ مِنهُ سِنينا

تَكونُ النَدامَةُ مِنهُ سِنينا

So do not obey them even for a day, for

So never obey them, for one day

So do not obey them for a single day, for truly,

The regret it brings may last for years.

Regret from that could last for years.

The regret born of that may endure for years.
