يُغَطّيconceals عُيوبَthe faults of المَرءِthe man كَثرَةُthe abundance of مالِهِhis wealth
يُغَطّي عُيوبَ المَرءِ كَثرَةُ مالِهِ
يُصَدَّقُhe is believed فيماin what قالَhe said وَهوَthough he is كَذوبُa habitual liar
يُصَدَّقُ فيما قالَ وَهوَ كَذوبُ
A man's abundant wealth conceals his faults.
A man's wealth covers his flaws.
Abundance of wealth conceals a man's defects,
He is believed in what he says, though he is a habitual liar.
He is believed when he speaks falsely.
He is believed in what he says, though he is a liar.
وَيُرزيand detracts بِعقلِfrom the intellect of المَرءِthe man قِلَّةُthe scarcity of مالِهِhis wealth
وَيُرزي بِعقلِ المَرءِ قِلَّةُ مالِهِ
يُحَمِّقُهُdeem him foolish الأَقوامُthe people وَهوَthough he is لَبيبُdiscerning
يُحَمِّقُهُ الأَقوامُ وَهوَ لَبيبُ
And a man's scant wealth discredits his intellect.
A man's lack of money reveals his intellect.
While a lack of wealth undermines a man's intellect,
People deem him foolish, though he is discerning.
People think him a fool, yet he is wise.
People deem him a fool, though he is wise.
